I have a Toshiba 3x32H60 television. We were away for the weekend and did not unplug the television. There is also a DVD player, lights etc. plugged in to the same room and socket. When we returned we found we couldn't turn the tv on, but we could turn on everything else. We were told while we were gone that we had several electrical storms. Am I to assume that's the problem? Is there anyway to fix the television if it was zapped?

Just as our modern sets can remember user settings when the AC goes off, they well may record error conditions for an extended length of time too just as our cars do.
Flash memory (used in such applications and only type used in digital cameras for example) can keep information for a very long time.
Even if not used in your set, there is surely backup provisions that can keep info handy for days and possibly weeks by using components that mimic batteries to retain even standard memory for weeks.
Most PCs have provisions for discharging this kind of circuit which then resets possible stored error conditions and returns stored values to factory conditions.
Feel lucky this time I'd say.

I witnessed my TV blackout during an electrical storm with a very nearby strike. It now won't turn on but makes a hum when plugged in. Otherwise totally non-functional. I am assuming it is fried and not worth fixing since it is an old JVC 32" tube TV which still gave a very nice picture (AV-32730).
