Connecting a esata port to a sate external hard drive

I don't think there is a converter from USB to ESATA, but you could buy a new Hard Drive enclosure that has those options, but I am not sure if you are willing to take out the HD from the existing one.

Do external HDDs with both eSATA and USB require both to power up?

No, one or the other.

I wondered too, when my new eSATA external disk did not work with my laptop.

If you have a faulty eSata connector into your laptop the eSata won't work at all, but you can probably still use the USB until you can get a better quality eSATA expresscard / PCI connector. I think the standards have changed and an older eSATA expresscard won't do the job with modern laptop and disk.

ESATA Connection problem with My Book & my laptop w/ Vista

Had the same problem with a WD esata 1TB drive and an HP DV6 laptop. Using Vista home premium. Lots of experimentation BIOS settings and driver update, and finally fixed it by trimming back a couple of mm of the plastic shoulders on each connector of the esata cable. A few depth measurements and it became clear that the connectors weren't going in deep enough otherwise. The cable was a Belkin of reasonable quality.

No problems now, but the drive is only recognized if it's connected at boot-up.

The core of the problem is the external casing of both the laptop and the WD drive enclosure. They're thick and keep the cable connector from going in far enough. Perhaps manufacturers of the cables or the esata devices are sloppy, or the standard isn't specified well enough. I've seen pictures of esata cables that have significantly different dept.

Device driver problem in Windows XP using a USB 2.0 device on a laptop with USB 1.1 controllers

Disable the USB 1.1 on-board option from the motherboard and install a 2 or 4 port USB 2.0 PCI/ISA card.

These cards are quite cheap these days and will do the trick rather than replacing the more expensive back up external hard drive ESATA/USB 2.0 hard drive.

New Seagate FreeAgentPro USB eSATA 500GB power on light not glows

Thank you for your reply.

I have solved the problem with local help.

Printed installation manual of Seagate 500 GB eSATA external hard drive has not properly mentioned how to use power on/off switch once connected to mains. I could get local help, who has already used the device. On/Off switch to be pressed for few seconds after mains connected, sometimes it comes automatically once power is on and USB cable pluged to the USB port of PC if power supply is ok. There is no indicator for the power supply (before device glows) after connected to the mains. I was in confusion whether power supply is ok or not.

Finally, It was found that the problem was with mains power supply and I have changed the power socket and adapter.
