Is it a 4 Cartridge printer or two cartridge printer?? Depending on the model of printer you own most cartridges will not re-set the ink levels after being refilled, This will cause a error message regarding the cartridge being empty but you are able to continue to print by following the instructions on the screen.
HP Printers that take the 02 Range of cartridges (6 separate colours) Can not be refilled. The printer simply stops working if it thinks there is an empty cartridge and there is no way to reset the OEM Cartridges. Refillable cartridges and compatible cartridges are available though.
If the Error is relating to recognizing the cartridge try simply cleaning the contacts on the front of the cartridge and also inside the printers cartridge holder. Some ink may have leaked and worked its way between the cartridge and printer.

Check if cartridge is genuine
check if it is really a brand new one or fake
power cycle the printer
check if it has an alignment option,align the cartridge with new inks
check if it has a clean utility automatic cleaning
or you can manually clean the contacts on printheads which detects the inks the you inserted
reset the unit if you know how to
different printer has specific way of resetting
most probably you are just getting a rejection error try using theold one if that fixes the issue it means there must be an issue with brand new inks
