Question about Arris WR850G Router (DHWR850G)
Right off the top I can imagine that the laptop is smirking because it has a battery to get it through the power outage. What may be happening is that the desktop loses it's ip address or the router defaults back to DHCP rather than PPPoE which is where it belongs for DSL. 3 ways to fix this:
1) Reset the power on the DSL modem and wait a minute or two.
2) Go to Start>Run>type 'cmd', Enter, type 'ipconfig /release' then 'ipconfig /renew' then 'ipconfig /all' to see all of the ip addresses for each adaptor and gateway.
3) Go to Start>Run type 'http://192.168.10.1' and a logon window appears. User name is 'motorola', Password is 'admin'. A webpage appears showing you are now talking to your router. In the LAN tab choose PPPoE for automatic DSL control settings. You can also temporarily select DHCP to use the 'Release' and 'Renew' buttons here which is the same as the ipconfig commands you did at the Command Prompt in step 2 but reselect PPPoE before you leave the router control panel. You can also select STATIC if you already know your ip addresses but for DSL you normally use PPPoE. If you haven't done this before then peruse all of the other controls that you can access here. (If you are a gamer this is where you set up your DMZ and so on.
Have a nice day, Steve Medley
