I have a Dell Dimension 4700, the problem is that recently, i went to start it up, nothing would happen, the 4 ABCD lights don't light up, and i notice this steady amber light. So it was determined that a device is incorrectly installed or malfunctioning. I made diagnostics by trial and error.. the video card, sound card, and memory cards all work properly (i still get the steady amber with none of them installed, including USB peripherals!) I checked the hard drive and the CD drives, both are functioning properly .. the only time it works is when i tap the case right where the processor sits, and miraculously, i push the power button and it boots up. Then, after i turn it off, and turn it back on, the problem reappears and i'm back to square one. my guess is it could be that the CPU is failing..? You can try to reseat the CPU (processor) chip. Inorder to do that you have to remove the heatsink and then reapply thermal paste (compound) to the surface of processor. The processor rarely goes bad.

i attempted reseating the CPU, but the problem still persists, with or without the CPU

You have a rootkit virus, the only answer is reformat the drive and start fresh, sorry.
After a fresh install is done immediately install service(can be downloaded free from microsoft.com) pack 3, because sp2 is vulnerable to a host of trouble.

I turned on my Dell Dimension 4700 computer, but the amber light started to blink . I held the start up button for 5 seconds and the light went out. I tried to start it up again and got the same thing,...

Vaughn it sounds like the power supply is going bad, try another known good working power supply. If that doesn't work then the motherboard would need to be replaced. If the power supply isn't giving the correct voltages that could cause the computer not to turn on. If the motheboard isn't able to convert the voltages properly then the motherboard could be faulty.

Dimension 4700 wont light up the monitor.

Hi Cactus,

My name is ArmyMason, let me get this straight. You have a Dell Dimension 4700 and the Monitor isnt working with the PC? This could be one of two things. Either the monitor is bad, to test this I would connect it to some other computer to verify its not the monitor. It could be the video card. According to Dell it the light combo you gave me indicates their is an issue with the floppy or hard drive and you should check to see if all the cables are correctly seated on the motherboard and on the Drives.

I really think it could be an issue with the video card. To resolve this I would consider purchasing a new card or rip one out of an old know good computer to see if that is the issue.

Thanks,
ArmyMason

Dell Dimension 4700 CD/DVD drive not reading

The CD Drive has probably gone bad. You will have to buy a replacement drive. I recommend newegg.com. The price will be about 30$ for a DVD burner. If you want just a DVD player or CD Burner then it will be even cheaper. Dell provides a very easy to read step by step guide with pictures on replacing your drive here:

Good Luck!

Hope this helped!
