Question about GE Advantium 120 Convection/Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Door hard to open on GE Advantium

The door is very tight, and difficult to open. I should have called within the year it was under warranty but I thought it would losen up. Any suggestions?

It does not seem to be scraping but as if there is suction pulling against you when you try to open the door. Same with closing in that it's rather loud because of the resistance.

Does it seem like the edge of the door is scraping against the control panel frame?

If so, the hinges may be out of alignment.

When you try to open the door, does it feel like it's scraping or like it's sticky, as if there were grease in the door latch openings?

That's odd.

I think you're just going to have to examine it while opening and closing the door.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

That can help. Good luck.

I recommend that you bookmark that link to your favorites.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

But if it's under magnetron warranty, G.E. will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.

Chances are you have a shorted high voltage diode or magnetron.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

The owner's manual will tell you how long your magnetron warranty is.

No display, open the door lights on

Chances are that's a bad connection on the control board, which we repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases in about a week or so.

But for a common counter top microwave such as this, if it's out of warranty, it would probably be more economical to replace it.

If it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

GE Microwave shuts off after running 3 seconds

It is a loose or bad magnetron emitting electrical interference that disrupts the control unit.

When you move the circuit board away from the magnetron or take the cover off, the interference is weakened, and the control unit works fine.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If it's within the mag warranty, G.E. should send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832 with your model, serial, and manufacturing date.

If nothing else, you can save about $50-75 if you remove it from the wall and take it to a GE-authorized servicer.

Broken door handle, have part but can't put it on.

Thats disgusting mate! The doors are either clip together, plastics or if stainless as per photo, it would require opening the case, removal of door then prising off the fascia trim to get to the handles.

I'd ring them back up, that is not a user servicable part as it will bugger the finish trying to separate the doort.

Best of luck

Possible door adjustment problem

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

Or you can return it for replacement.

I would not suggest trying to fix this yourself since it's under warranty.

Often I have to hit the open panel several times to open the DMT24203 purchased in January of this year. It started a couple of weeks ago . Would appreciate any info Patricia Kuhl

This is usually due to grease buildup, or a worn or broken door open button or door open lever.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

Sharp R-345M microwave oven not heating. Touch pad is working fine and the turner is spinning.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

Since the turntable is running, I would say it is not a door switch problem.
