Question about HP Compaq Business d530 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Hello I have HP D530 PC. I plugged IDC-DB9 cable to motherboards COM2 connector. Now WinXP SP3 does not allow to add COM2 with its address, it did not find port automatically so I added it manually. It says that IO address is conflicting with motherboard resource device but I cannot find COM2 address from either of two motherboard recourse-devices. Those addresses starts from D400 and COM ports does not use that high addresses. I have updated chipset drivers and BIOS but that did not help. BIOS does not have COM2 option. Can you tell me how to get COM2 working on that computer? Regards, Larry

Why not say what you are up to? (end goal)
what RS232 device is it,??? be nice to know that one key fact , no?
btw XP does not handle COM ports well.
In fact you can not run 2 com ports at same time, or it conflicts.
so turn them all off but one. (id go COM1)
ever seen BIOS before, they can be shut all off or 1 or 2 to 4 on
depends on the exact MOBO that.
most pc now have no such ports, they are gone.
today we use USB with the RS230 prolific dongul, adaptor
to get vitural com ports.
and never RUN XP, its horrid OS
I have vast experience with RS232 (IBM COM ports)
and 485 and IEEE488. running factories with it before Ethernet cam out and TCP-IP .
if you told me end goal I would have gave you all;choices but you didnt.

running an old RS232 printer?
running car software with a Rs232, ECU interface to monitor engines? (i have 2 that work)
a serial terminal ? using hyperterm or Procomm?
some other odd relic?

no more facts.
some mobos have 1 com port but 3 more not wired.
others have 2, and 1 wired
some 2 wired
some have non but the chip there but unwired
confusing no?
you need to know that before using that DB9 JACK
for sure. and varies by actual model and SUB model.
D530-xxxxx what is xxxxx

its SFF , right? small form factor PC

sold with OS2 or windows and windows 98 through vista
guess at 2004 year, PC.

ok read the product page on this pc
it has Serial - Optional via PCI card
so is your com port HP or other brands,(vast there are)
why not ditch the it and buy this.
PC has 6 USB ports.
we use this to make a RS232 port, but
if going 100 meters, it will fail. you never once said what.
ive run RS232 to max + distances with real 12vdc +- cards
and low capacitance cables $$
the Prolific chips are not 12v, but 5v and only run short distances.

one of many sold
watch out for counterfeit chips, some top brand software
finds (bogus) Prolific chips and shuts down.
rare but needs knowing.

new egg has them and are legit.
it creates a virtual com port, and just works great
used it on my of my old (unstated ) hardware.

next time post what COm port car is there?
most cards have a secret hot key, to its OWN BIOS.
like all SCSI cards have, or SAS or ? the like
the card has a book and this is covered.
need to know what card it is first.
if you see errors above, that is because i have not your service tag data or you mobo HP part numbers.

try to refer this problem to your manufacturer/ store owner of your laptop because most probably its either your memory(RAM) or your video card needs to be may have loose their connections.

because in the desktop PC's, these are the common problems especially upon booting up your computer.

You are missing the front headphone / microphone connector that plugs into the motherboard. Or a way to jump this to close the headphones so the sound will come out the back.

I get error messages in device manager on standard floppy disk controller, communications port (com2), communications port (com3), and ecp printer port(lpt1). winxp

You can try fixing the problem by first dismantling all the connecting cables specially the cable that connects your hard drives and other removable disks to the mother board. Clean the terminal pins to both connectors, make sure that its free from dusts and dirt. Reassemble everything and see to it that they are properly connected before running your PC.

WinXP with NERO8, and SP3

If you have WinXP and NERO v. 8, - then DONT upgrade yor system to SP3.
Your controlpanel disaper, and uninstall of the SP3 is impasible, but, - if you got this problem, do as follow:
"run" regedit, find and delete all nero 8 related issues, it takes about a milion years, but its the only way.
When this is done, and your controlpanel is reachable, delete SP3, and do all the updates for SP2 +.
Then reinstall NERO8 again, and you are back on track.

I would like to upgrade my motherborad and i dont know witch one to buy

You may have issues with upgrading the motherboard on a Small Form Factor (SFF) desktop computer. The issue is not the space for the motherboard - it is with the proprietary power supply that HP/Compaq use with these small desktop computers.

You will be forced to use the existing power supply which may not work (i.e. have the correct power connectors) for the new motherboard.

Let us know what your goals are for the motherboard upgrade (have more RAM installed, add a SLI video card, faster processor, etc) and we can assist with what is and is not possible.

I have a new reformat pc from hp compaq d530. We I can't connect to the internet may be because there is no local area connection. What should I do?

first make sure that you have installed your lan driver and ethernet cable is connected from both end and there is power in your router. Now at command prompt type ipconfig and look for your ip address assinged manually or automatic.....

If you see any ip address try to ping the ip itself and then try to ping gateway..

at command prompt type
ping -t (your ip add)

similarly ping the gateway

if you get reply from ip and gateway then it should reply

HP d530 PC - SATA Harddisk - Chassis does not close any more

They make SATA cables with a 90 degree connection on one end.
Hopefully this will solve your clearance problems with your case.

Here is a link to website that carries these.

They work great and fit tight against the drive.

Hope this helps,

Does my d530 CMT have a SATA connector?

Answers to your questions:
1. Yes
2. Very likely
3. a Google search should show you what the connectors look like.
4 HP/Compaq do a good job of providing documentation. Go to and put in your system information. You should be able to locate motherboard diagrams there. If you can't let me know and I'll try to locate them.

Hy hp d530 won't turn on

I have a similar problem:

My Compaq d530 was running fine until one day during plugging in a USB device (MP3 player) the system completely stopped working. The only thing which is active is the green LED on the mainboard.

I have checked several things and have found the following:
- IDE cable had burn marks!! (nasty)
- USB connection cable which runs from the front to the motherboard has changed in color. (darker green while all other connector have e more light white color.)

These are the signs of a brun out, but I do not have any solution to repair this.

Economically the best thing to do is buy a second hand (or new) system. (d530 are about 60 euros these days (march 2009). Hardware parts can maybe salvaged.

Serial meaning 2.5mm stereo headphone looking jack to DB9 or "atari joystick" looking plug? I had one on my first Toshiba PDR-M1 camera but that was like 9 years ago. You can probably find the pinouts online for that cable, I believe it is a standardized cable.

The stereo plug is wired to the PC serial port as shown in the following diagram:
tip ring sleeve +---------------------------------+
| |
/-------+-----+--------------+ |
| RxD | Gnd | TxD | 2.5 mm Stero Plug |
\-------+-----+--------------+ |
| |
DB9*: pin 2 pin 5 pin 3 +---------------------------------+

DB9*: Optionally short together pin 4 (DTR) to pin 6 (DSR) and
pin 7 (RTS) to pin 8 (CTS)
The following table also describes the camera cable's wiring: Camera PC's
Plug DB9* Signal Name Direction
---- ---- ----------- ---------
- 1 Carrier detect (CD) input to PC
tip 2 Receive data (RxD) input to PC
sleeve 3 Transmit data (TxD) output from PC
- 4 \ Data terminal ready (DTR) output from PC
ring 5 | Signal ground (Gnd) -
- 6 / Data set ready (DSR) input to PC
- 7 \ Request to send (RTS) output from PC
- 8 / Clear to send (CTS) input to PC
- 9 Ring indicator (RI) input to PC
* Note that the cable's D-subminature DB9 RS-232 serial port connector is female. This connector also goes by the historically more correct name of "DE-9J".
