Typically with this model it is either the defrost timer or the defrost thermostat which has stopped working. In short your refrigerator is not cycling through its normal defrost cycle every 8 to 10 hours.

The temporary fix to the manually defrost the freezer section by unplugging the unit overnight or gently heating the back for the freezer with a hair dryer until all of the ice is gone. The frost will gradually build up again until the problem reoccurs (usually 1 to 2 weeks)

Most of the testing to confirm the fault requires a multimeter for testing electrical circuits.

The problem shows behind the back wall of the freezer. There will be thick frost build up on the silver element. (do not chip it off since any damage to the silver coils can result in a huge repair bill. On one side of the silver coil assembly there is a component that is designed to open when the heater gets hot enough. This part is about the size of a stack of 6 quarters and typically has a blue end coating on one end. The other end is silver in colour and should be clipped on or near the heating element. It will have 2 wires coming out of the blue end.

If this part is defective then it will have to be replaced. by cutting a splicing a new one in. Be sure to unplug the fridge before replacing it.

The heater and timer are simply unplugged and replaced with a new part is defective.

There are 3 main components that can give issues; the timer, the thermostat and the heater. All 3 should be checked to confirm the fault.

There is a couple holes in the back of your fridge, I have heard these holes get clogged and that is what may be happening. Though clearing the holes is only a temporary fix. Also is the fan itself in the fridge working?
Thanks,
Lee

There is a circulation fan to cool the frig, it uses the cold air from the freezer and sends it to the frig, all refrigerators work this way, another common issue is the defrost timer is not working correctly or stuck on. Check and see if you can detect air circulation (it will be a very slight) into the fridge from the freezer section, I will be willing to bet there isn't any.

Top part of refrigerator cooling but not the bottom; please help

Defrost the freezer completely. Use boiled water in a pot to make it faster. Frost built up inside the freezer is blocking the vent that lets cold air in the fridge. Good luck

Whirlpool Refrigerator or freezer Doesnot cool

I have a similar top freezer and during the summer
I have had a problem where the frdge part does not get cold. The two holes coming from the bottom of the freezer to the fridge are blocked
with ice. I took the back part off the freezer
got rid of a clump of ice. I also used a hair dryer
in the fridge section to melt the ice in the holes.
