There is a red reset button on the back of the machine. When it trips, the brush won't engage. Press the reset button and then try your machine again.

SOURCE: fixing my vacuum cleaner

Check to make sure that your agitator still spins. (Agitator = brush). If your agitator still spins, it eliminates your belt and agitator as likely culprits. The last possible solution would be that your vacuum is clogged. The grinding sound might be a motor-related issue or could possibly mean your bearings are going out. Check the bearings of the agitator and the motor of the vacuum.

Accessing to the agitator and belt can be done by removing the bottom cover of your vacuum. There are 2 scews that are holding the bottom cover to the head of the unit. Remove these 2 scews and the bottom cover should snap off.

SOURCE: Electrolux 1572E (Discovery II) How to remove

Remove the handle assembly by taking the big screw out and pull up on the handle. Remove the four screws where the top half connects to the bottom half. Two on the outside back and two on the inside front where the bag goes. You'll need a long phillips #2 screwdriver. Always have the power disconected. Pull up on the bag housing while twisting it side to side.
Good luck after you get in.

It sounds like there is something wrong with the latching assembly. GO to the Sears Parts website and enter your Model number. Look at the parts assembly for the Nozzle, and the problem will be in one of items 12 through 17.

Hoover wind tunnel u6445-900. my vacuum seems to have super suction on carpet. You have to DRAG the vacuum and PUSH it with great force to get it to move with the self propelled switch engaged.

It's an issue that the front roller isn't engaged. there's usually a belt connected to the roller on one side of it. That belt is connected to the same motor that develops the suction. You have to find that area and either pull the belt over the motor and/or the brush. Close it back up and turn it on again.

Does not seem to adjust to different carpet sizes

Hi Denise,

DC14 is engineered to adjust automatically to suit the type of flooring you're using it on. You can also use the brush control on the cleaner head to turn the brushbar on for vacuuming carpets, and off for vacuuming hard floors.

However, if you're concerned the cleaner doesn't seem to be working correctly, please follow the steps shown in our online support guide to identify and resolve any issues:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=626&product=DC14-ANIMAL_US

Move the carpet height control switch to a higher position if the vacuum is difficult to push. If the setting is too low for the carpet being cleaned, the brushes press against the floor preventing the vacuum from moving easily.Set to a medium-high height setting then check.Slide the "Self-Propel" button to the "ON" position if the cleaner does not self-propel. -----------
The self-propel feature operates only when the cleaner switch and the self propel button are both ON. ---------- Try this settings and check. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Did you check the powerhead for obstructions? With a bend in the tube just below where the hose connects, this is a common spot for clogs. To check, detach hose and drop a coin in the hole. If it doesn't drop through, a blockage is present. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to push clog back through to brush. It can be removed with long-nose pliers from there.
For height adjustment, check for debris that may be preventing the nozzle from raising and lowering. There may be something inside the powerhead preventing it as well.

You have a problem with the electrical switches. If you are comfortable with this, take apart and double check internal wiring to make sure nothing was frayed, or disconnected. Make sure it is unplugged. If you know how to operate a multimeter, you can use it to check continuity in each switch.
