First, if your iPhone is carrier locked (as most iPhones are), you can only use a SIM card from the same carrier -- if you purchased a subsidized iPhone from AT&T, you can only use SIM cards from AT&T, for example.
If your phone is in a case, remove the case. Power off your phone by pressing the power button for several seconds and confirming the power off operation when the on-screen prompt appears.
On the top of the phone, just to the right of the headphone jack, is a small hole. Gently insert an unfolded paper clip or a short piece of thin wire into the hole and press the SIM release button. The SIM tray should pop out. Carefully remove the SIM tray, replace the SIM card and re-insert the SIM tray.
Now you should be able to power your phone back on and use your new SIM card.
