Maytag 21.7 Cu. Ft. Top-Mount Refrigerator - White Logo
Anonymous Posted on Apr 06, 2011

I have a Matag Refrigerator Model MTB2156DEW. The freezer is located on the top of the fresh food compartment. For approximately a week the refrigerator has been constantly running without cycling. Using a refrigeration pocket thermometer, I measured the following temperatures. The fresh food compartment is approximately 52F. The freezer section is below 0F. Two days ago I had noted a thin layer of ice across the bottom inside the Freezer section. No matter what setting I put the thermostat on the unit will not cycle; and the freezer remains below 0F. I cannot get the food compartment below 51F at any given time. Please let me know of your diagnosis. Thank you.

This is a self defrosting unit. What would the permanent fix be?

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2011

Prior to disassembly, I verified that the quartz heater is good by enegerzinig it by rotating the small plastic shaft on the defrost timer. The heater did stay on for about 20 minutes without the refrigerator itself running. I opened the inside of the freezer and found the drain to be blocked with ice. I melted this with a hair dryer, as suggested. I reverified that the quartz heater did work and it glowed nicely. I poured vinegar down the drain and it flowed slowly to the pan at the bottom of the base of the refrigerator. I did not know any other way to check / clean the drain to the pan below. There really was not much ice at all on the coil. Some on the little clamp on 38F thermostat. I put my frozen food back in the freezer and turned the unit back on. After approximately two hours, the fresh food compartment is at 40F on the #2 temperature setting. The refrigerator runs continuous without cycling. Great cold air but will not cycle on and off. Please advise me of your suggestions.

Defrost the unit. The fridge section cannot cool if the freezer is iced over since the fridge gets its cold from the freezer. If you don't have a second fridge use a hair dryer to speed the defrost.

My unit is a self defrosting one. I believe it should automatically defrost every 10 hours.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2011

If your unit is iced up then obviously the self-defrost function was not able to stop it from getting that way. The issue is that your fridge is not cooling, not whether or not the unit is self-defrost. If ice is blocking the melted ice from draining out of your refrigerator, your unit will get more and more icy and continue to block air getting to your fridge. The defrost coils can only cover so much of your unit and the unit is not able to unclog a frozen or blocked drain. If you try the solution and it does not work then I will gladly give more advice, but that is the easiest and cheapest solution to try at this point.

Well it's good that your unit is cooling better, but if it's getting cold enough and still not cycling you probably have a bad thermostat. I had thought maybe you weren't getting quite cold enough to trip it but that's obviously not the problem.

How do I reduce the freezer temperature

Locate the the thermostat - usually located in the fresh food compartment (if a refrigerator). Make small adjustments of about 1/8 of the dial's travel at a time - and check the change after 24 hours. Be sure to check both the freezer AND fresh food compartment to prevent temperature from dropping to low for fresh food. Best results are obtained by using a thermometer put in a glass of water in the fresh food area and another thermometer left in the freezer. Most manufacturers suggest a freezer temperature not greater than 0Ā°F and fresh food 35Ā°F to 40Ā°F. If you need specific help with this - please include the make AND complete model number of your freezer.

Side-by-Side: Refrigerator will not maintain temp below 50 Deg. Freezer works fine - where is the problem? Model Number MSD2757AE

Your problem may be with:

* the "damper control assembly", which is located in the upper left side of the fresh food compartment. This control regulates the amount of cold air originating from the freezer compartment that enters the fresh food compartment.
* there may be an issue with the "fresh food temperature control assembly"

Check the temperature settings in the fresh food compartment (should be located up front). I recommend the "one-half way mark" for both freezer and fresh food compartments.

Top freezer quit freezing. Refrigerator works.

Good day,
Yes, the cold weather is the cause.
Your machine is cycled off and on by the thermostat located in the fresh food compartment. When the fresh food compartment is satisfied, it will shut off the entire machine.
Any temperature below 55 degrees will reduce running time until the freezer will not function, or at best poorly.
Engineers designed domestic refrigerators to balance properly between 70 and 95 degrees. It should be in your user manual.

Bottom of fridge not cooling

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment. Something is restricting that air flow which causes your fresh food compartment to stay warm.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck closed, for example), the freezer will get VERY cold while the fresh food compartment will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is restricting air flow from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

Left door open while cleaning out refrigerator and top unit shut off freezer is still on what should I do

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

In your case, the door must be stuck all the way open, allowing all the cold air to be diverted into the fresh food compartment. The compressor cycle is controlled by the thermostat in the fresh food compartment and thus 'short cycles' because the fresh food compartment acheives normal temperature while the freezer is relativel warm.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck in the extreme open position, for example), the fresh food compartment will get VERY cold while the freezer will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is diverting all the cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel/door/flap itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

We have a ge side by side and the refrigerator is freesing stuff. the model number is GSS25X SNA BS

Is it all areas of the fresh food side that are freezing your items, or is it the drawer area?

There is a direct connection (on my GE side-by-side, at least) between the freezer compartment and the drawers in the fresh food compartment. The size of the connection is controlled with a wheel or a slider. This could contribute to freezing in that area of the fresh food compartment.

Otherwise, it could be the temp sensor(s) in the fresh food compartment. If the computer thinks the temp is too high in the fresh food compartment, it will continue to cool.

It could be a problem with the motorized door that connects the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment, located at the top of the dividing wall between the compartment. That door should close when the temp in the fresh food compartment is cold enough. If that door mechanism has failed, is disconnected, or otherwise blocked in the open position, cold air from the freezer compartment will continue to circulate into the fresh food compartment.

Top refrigerator not cooling--freezer icy

This has happened in my GE side-by-side (model GSS20IEMDWW). For me, the problem was caused by a faulty temp sensor in the fresh food side. That sensor never signalled the computer that the temp in the fresh food side was cool enough, so the compressor ran constantly.

Since the compressor was running constantly, the evaporator coils (back wall of the freezer compartment) eventually iced over (took about a week). Since the fan that draws air over the evaporator coils could no longer move any air (due to the icing), the temperature in the fresh food side continued to climb. (The fresh food side is chilled through a hole with a motorized door at the top of the dividing wall, so if no air is moving in the freezer compartment, temps in the fresh food compartment climb.)

I replaced the temp sensor in the fresh food side and solved the problem for a while. About six months later I had the same problem again, so I replaced both temp sensors in the freezer compartment - which solved the problem again. (My fridge is about seven years old.)

If you are going to replace any of the temp sensors, replace them all under the principle of "if one failed, the rest will soon fail too".

Fridge keeps on freezing everything inside of it

This refrigerator only has one thermostat located in the fresh food compartment it is designed to activate the sealed system (cooling) until it reaches approximately 37 deg f in the fresh food compartment. The damper controls how fast the cold air can move from the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment. Allowing you to control the temp in the freezer by controlling the flow of cold air to the thermostat.

You have one of two problems.
#1 your thermostat is no longer opening when it achieves set temp. fix = replace thermostat pn 61005798 $35
#2 your damper arm or assemblie has broken. Fix = Replace damper or broken arm and actuator.
damper assembly pn12001377 $44
damper actuator pn 61002000 $2
damper arm pn 61001999 $2

Top mounted freezer on refrigerator not working

Move the refrigerator to a room that is at least 50 degrees F.

Temps on most refrigerators are regulated by the fresh foods temp. If your garage is let's say 35 degrees, the fresh foods temp will most likely never raise enough to turn the refrigerator on. With the refrigerator never running, the freezer compartment will warm to 35 degrees, resulting in everything melting. Even if garage is a bit warmer, say 45, the refrig will not run long enough for the freezer to maintain a low enough temperture. If the garage temp falls to below freezing, say 20 degrees, the food in the fresh foods compartment will freeze. (outdoor beverage dispensers have internal heaters to prevent product from freezing !) Please don't rate this if not a Fix-Ya for you, as anything else lowers my score.
