The shredder will not automatically shut off. After you have finished feeding the documents to be shreeded the machine contunues to run and you must manuall shut it off.

Blow out the sensors with some compressed air, Using a can of compressed air, look for the sensors that detect the paper and give them a blast or two, then try it, it may take a couple of tries.
This may also be a good time to lubricate the cutting heads, if it is a good machine with metal heads a light oil applied to paper then run through the shredder will pass the oil onto the heads.
A shredder oil or light oil like 3 in 1, these usually have a narrow nozzle to limit the oil flow, draw lines, do a picture or spell your name on the paper with oil and shred it. You have just serviced your shredder.
If it is a less expensive shredder with plastic heads, shredding a couple if sheets of waxed paper will pass the wax onto the cutting heads reducing friction.

there is a photo eye down inside the paper slot. when you put the paper in it trips the sensor. this sensor get covered up with fine paper clippings unplug machine and take some compressed air or maybe a q-tip and clean the sensor. should be two right across from each other

If the shredder has "eyes" where you insert the paper try cleaning them with a soft cloth( Unplug machine first.) If that does not fix it then most likely the pcb inside has gone defective....phone supplier to get replacement parts and prices.

Try blowing some canned air down into the feed slot to clean the sensors.

Thickness of papers is too much. Feed only 1-2 pages at a time.

To clear, pull paper back out. Run reverse, then forward, then feed 1 page at a time using a clean edge.

some of the new shredders do that so you should get a shredder that has a warrenty so if this happens again you dont have to worry about haveing to buying or fixing the shredder because when you try to fix these type of machines you ether end up just causing the machine to be comepletly unusable or it works of a little wile and u have to try to fix it again instead i advise you buy a replacement Fellowes® PS-79Ci doesnt jam and can dice 12 sheets of paper

Blow out the electric eye in the feed slot with compressed air.

My guess is their is a build-up of shreds in the cutter shroud that is binding the assembly. Need to take it apart and clean.
