One day the microphone in my Samsung SPH-M500 just quit working. I can hear ok but no one can hear me at all. Please advise. If the microphone needs to be replaced where do I get one and is it easily done by an amateur?

I might be wrong, but, as far as I know, the SPH-M500 is a CDMA phone, and, as such, it lacks a SIM card. To either confirm or deny my point, please, download its user guide from this location.
You can only switch carrier by loading the phone with adequate BIN and PRL files. Each company working on CDMA technology, has typical files. In Canada, the Samsung has strict control over the software and this is done by the authorised tech support companies who are in contract with the Bell, Tellus etc. through Samsung Canada.
Microphone is not working. I am a professional in cell phone repairs. This is a commom manufacturing problem with this model. The mic has 5 soldering pads and due to bad soldering during manufacturing process one of the pads is not soldered properly. It needs to be resoldered. it can be done only by a competent technician. It needs very controlled reheating by a small nozzel hot air soldering equipment.
