Question about Brother MFC-7340 All-In-One Laser Printer
The busy signal that you hear when trying to send is likely from a receiver-off-hook tone.
The busy signal that someone gets when trying to fax you is due to a receiver being off-hook.
Suggest you check the following...
1. that the handset of the external telephone on the fax line is properly placed in its cradle.
2. if "hook" has been used/pressed on the fax machine, that it has been properly cancelled.
3. if there is an answering machine on the same fax line, that it is not off-hook / answering.

Quoting you: "It is on Fax and has Standard on it. The Dial up signal goes OK but then it goes to a busy signal. I tried 3 fax numbers but still the same outcome. Regards Lesley"... Your comments indicate that your Fax is on a dedicated fax line that has nothing else on it. So your machine would automatically answer every call as a fax and you would choose Fax Only as your receive mode. The Standard you mention refers to the resolution. Of all the possible configurations, this is the simplest and should be straight-forward. I am assuming now from your comments that no changes were made to your fax machine when all of a sudden, the problems with the busy signals began. So I can only assume the problems likely stem from something that happened to your dedicated fax line...
1. the MFC-7340 comes set for Tone dialing service.
2. your dedicated line was switched to Pulse dialing service (rotary)
3. dialing using Tones on a Pulse dialing line will not break dial tone which eventually goes ROH
(Receiver Off Hook) which sounds like a very fast busy - click on the following link to hear it...

4. you can change the MFC-7340 to do Pulse dialing instead of the default Tone dialing as follows...

Hi,
You need to reset the memory, since previously you have dialed some number, which is not able to connect. So restart the printer. Unplug the printer for 10 minutes and plug back the power to the printer.
Hope this helps.

Please ensure the set up for receiving fax and sending fax is done properly.
Click the Start button , click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.
To use Fax view, at the bottom of the left pane, click Fax.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Fax Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Click the General tab, and then, under Device name, make sure that the modem is selected.
Under Send/receive options, make sure that the Allow the device to send faxes check box is selected.
Make sure that the Allow the device to receive fax calls check box is selected, and then choose how to receive faxes:
•
To manually answer phone calls as incoming fax calls using Windows Fax and Scan, click Manually answer, and then click OK.
•
To have Windows automatically answer phone calls as incoming fax calls, click Automatically answer after X rings, select the number of rings after which Windows can try to answer phone calls as incoming fax calls, and then click OK.
Hope this helps.
If you still face problem let me know.

Usually answered in minutes!
Hi Shane080
I turned the machine off for about 45mins but it is still doing the same thing. It is only about 10months old. It is on Fax and has Standard on it. The Dial up signal goes OK but then it goes to a busy signal. I tried 3 fax numbers but still the same outcome. Regards Lesley
Hi shane080, This fax machine is not connected to a computer, it is only connected to the power plug and the telephone line. Is there anything that needs to be changed in the set up programs? Regards Lesley
There is no telephone receiver on this machine so it cannot be the receiver is off the hook. I do not know about an answering machine on this unit. If "hook" has been pressed how do I cancel it?
I called Canon about this. They had me tweak the transmission start speed (Menu>FAX setting>TX settings>TX start speed). It was too fast. Set it to 4800. Then it was too slow. Clicked it up to 7200 and now it works!! TX Start Speed should not be too fast or too slow.
