Question about Maytag MAH6700AWW Neptune Front-Load Washer

MAH4000AWW Maytag Washer

Door won't lock / No spin. Board burnt up.
Is it true that Maytag offers a free upgrade that included the control board and wax lock unit to correct this? If so, where do I go to get this done. Machine is now 7 years old.

My question was... Does Maytag offer a FREE UPGRADE KIT (Control Board & Wax Lock Unit) to correct the posted problem?

If in fact it is true, then I would most certainly take the advice and contact Maytag at the appropriate 1-800 number,

  • justme_29229 Aug 05, 2008

That was much better!!! Thank you ;) I greatly appreciate your responses. On a 7 year old machine I was looking for the BEST and most affordable solution to resolve this problem (as the laundry begins to pile up) I had a repair tech out here that said the part would be aprox. $350.00 but thought the door lock kit came with it. seemed mighty pricey so I thought I'd look online to see what I could find. I can be pretty handy when I need to be, used to assemble PCB's. Anything is possible when you are in a pinch!

    Thanks again for your reply!

It is best to contact Maytag at the 1-800 number listed in your owner's manual (or on your machine's serial tag) to see of there is anything that they will do for you. It is best to call rather than use the on-line contact information as they may set up an appointment with an authorized servicer in your area for you.

If not there are a number of options from a Maytag authorized repair to a do it yourself kit which is available from.

I am not affiliated with the makers of this kit and it will not help most people that are not technically adept. There are pictures on the website showing the disassembly and repair procedure.

Sorry I should have been a little more clear.

Maytag did offer a free replacement kit (parts and labour) for a time but that time may have expired for most people.

Recently I have heard from some customers who have called into the 1-800 number have gotten excellent service (parts and labour paid for) and some have not gotten anything concessions at all.

I wish you the best of luck. :-)

Many of the (early) Maytag Neptune washers had more than their share of problems. So much so, a class action suit was brought against Maytag; and they paid for repairs, replaced washers or provided credits toward new washers. Many of the problems were tied to the control board and "wax motor" door latch mechanism. Maytag charged $300 - $400 and up to replace the entire control board - when the parts on the board can be easily replaced for several dollars.

Anyway, you didn't include the nature of the problem you're having, so it's hard to provide any direction. It is normal for the board to become darker near resistors - but not burnt. Most problems are burnt resistors, triac and transistors - and of course, in my case - the "wax motor" that was responsible for the whole problem in the first place. It reported that the door wasn't locked - so high speed spin never took place. Clothes were wet and took a long time to dry as a result.

Provide as much detail as you can for the best answers. What does it do? what doesn't it do? strange noises? Has it slowly been getting worse? Does it smell? Do you use regular or HD detergent? I know some questions sound crazy - but knowing the answers to them does help!

Maytag Neptune Front Load Washers No Spin Problem

A class suit was filed in the State of Illinois, USA and then later on won against Maytag in 2004 due to the high failure rate of the wax motor used in the door lock mechanism of their Neptune Front Load Washers. The wax motor is used to activate the door lock switch by extending its shaft when a voltage from the machine control is applied across its terminals. Its failure then leads to the breaking down of components in the expensive machine control board. This is the fact that angered the customers which led to the filing of the class suit.

The obvious symptom of a failed wax motor is the inability of the washer to advance to the spin cycle and the door lock lamp is not turned on. The washer stops momentarily at the end of the wash cycle then continue to tumble as the machine control checks the activation of the door lock switch. The control will not allow a spin speed higher than 51 revolutions per minute (RPM) unless the door lock switch is activated by the wax motor. It is a safety feature of the washer to prevent accident due to accidental opening of the washer door during a high speed spin.

Customers who purchased the Neptune Front Load Washers in the USA after April 1, 1997 and before August 9, 2004 are Class members and eligible for the repair reimbursement, replacement cost, or purchase certificate depending on the length of service of the machine. Call up Maytag at 1-888-MAYTAG (1-888-629824) for more information.

The models included in the class suit are as follows: MLE2000AYW, MLE2000AWW, MLE2000AZW, MLG2000AWW (Gas Stack Unit), MAH3000AAW, MAH3000AEW, MAH3000AGW, MAH3000AWA, MAH3000AWW, MAH3000BGW, MAH4000AWW, MAH4000BWW, MAH4000AWQ, MAH4000BWQ, MAH5500AWW, MAH5500BWW, MAH5500BWW, MAH5500BWQ, MAH55FLBWW, MAH55FLBWQ, MAH6500AWW, MAH6500AWQ, MAH7500AWW, MAH7500AWQ, MAH7550AAW, MAH7550AGW.

I have a maytag front load neptune. The door is locked but does not show that it is lock on the panel, it will not wash but will not open either, how can I get the door open?

they seem to have a issue with the doors on theses machines whirlpool owns maytag now
they were sued very bad for theses issue
The older Neptunes, such as the 2000 Stackers, MAH3000, MAH4000 and the MAH5500A series had some issues which I am sure Maytag has corrected these issues in the newer machines...

There are thousands who have been burnt by the door latch wax motor failure. What happens is the machine will stop spinning because the door latch will fail to lock. Deep inside it is caused by the mechanism that locks the door. The wax motor will draw too much current and damage the control board by burning a resistor (R11) and a triac (Q6).

However, if Neptune owners know to replace the door latch wax motor they can prevent the control board failure from happening. Please tell everyone you know about this important fact.

The older Neptune's also have a couple additional issues such as the moldy door boot and the reliability of the motor / motor control board. All three of these issues were involved in the class action lawsuit a couple of years ago. See for more Neptune information.

In addition, I just now started offering a bearing and seal kit for the Neptunes because when the bearings fail Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub for a service quote of around $900 or so. Why replace the whole outer tub? Just replace the worn bearings and 12002022 seal... See for the Neptune bearing kit information.

The older Neptunes run great once you take care of some small details...

What is the value of R-11 in the maytag ,MAH4000 AWW it's in the door lock wax motor for the hinh speed spin

The R-11 is on the control board, not in the door lock or wax motor. Value is 3.9KOhm, plus you'll need to replace the Q6 triac if R-11 is burnt out, as it's also dead.

Washer will wash but not spin

Sounds like the control board is bad. take the back panel off the control panel and look at the R11 resistor and see if it burnt. If it is replace the control board and the door wax motor (in the locking mechanism)

Maytag Neptune not spinning - further help pls if you can

Hi Charles,

If your door latch wax motor actuator pin color matches the body color (brownish color) then you have the defective wax motor and it needs to be replaced. See for step by step disassembly photos. Then, I would check the machine control board (located behind the timer in upper console) for a burnt resistor, R11 which is located near the left circuit board mounting slot. If the R11 is burnt you can try the STAGE 1 repair kit, which includes a new R11 resistor and Q6 triac and wax motor or you can purchase a new control board. Don't forget to unplug machine when servicing your Neptune.

You can try to solder the new R11 and Q6 into the machine control board as there is a video on the above mentioned site that shows you how to perform the R11 and Q6 replacement. Another option is to call local t.v. repair shops and see if they will replace the components for you for a nominal fee. I hope this helps

1999 Maytag Neptune front loader

Have you replaced your 12002535 door latch wax motor if you have a MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A or the 2000 stacker? These wax motors will eventually fail on every Neptune shipped. When the wax motor fails the upper machine control board be damaged and you will lose your spin function which leaves your clothes soaking wet. There is a website that offers a repair kit to see if your control board is useable again. Don't keep starting machine because you might cause further damage to control board and the motor control board located near the floor until you see if R11 is burnt on the upper machine control board located behind the timer.

See for more details and step-by-step disassembly photos.
