Maytag MBF 2256 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Logo
Anonymous Posted on Apr 01, 2011

I noticed that my side by side was not cold enough. I saw an exceess accumutaion of ice on the back and bottom of the freezer. These are the things I've done: vacuumed back and bottom of unit thouroughly; unpluged unit followed by defrosting freezer; restated unit. Since these efforts, the condenser is running constantly and I again have developed an exessive ice build-up yet neither side is getting nor staying cold enough. What, oh what should I do to heal it? Is purchase of a repair manual appropriate? Thank you for the time you'll take to answer my question. Terese

Thanks for the idea to use the compressor to blow the condenser coils clean. It worked really well.
Here's my deal: the icemaker stopped working about a week ago. We rarely use ice so that was no big deal, but two days ago we realized the freezer was not "freezering". There is cool (not cold) air blowing in, but nothing is freezing. I did notice that there was a bit of ice around the plastic chamber at the right rear so removed that. We unplugged ole Bessie last night hoping to shock her into working this morning, but alas, she is still playing tricks on us.
There is NO clicking (as suggested above re the compressor). What the heck are we to do?

If you have blow the Dust Bunnies out a 'Ole Bessie and she still hasn't got the guts she used too, then she has sprung a gas leak.....yeah, she runs on gas (freon) and if you get even the tiniest of leaks she will not work correctly....she will blow cool, but not cold air....
It sounds like this may be the problem....if so then it will be best to retire her rather then trying to fix her...

Freezer side not cold enough, similar temperature as Refrigerator side

It could be many things. My first guess would be the defrost. The coil that gets cold in your freezer builds ice on it and the only way to get the ice off is to run a heater near the coil long enough for the ice to melt. All freezers have something built in to defrost and domestic are typically just an electric heater on a timer. When your freezer stops working again, you may want to pull open the panel of your freezer and see if your coil (a heat exchanger that probably looks a lot like your car radiator) is covered in ice. If it is, it could be the timer or the actual heater that is bad.

Freezer and frig not as cold

It sounds like the heater that automatically defrosts the unit may have failed. Before calling service I recommend checking the following: all door seals, make sure they are closed and sealing properly, also the condenser coil either on the back or bottom of the machine should be vacuumed out regularly to get rid of dust buildup. If that's all good it may be the defrost heater and if you're handy you can look up on youtube how to replace it or call a professional.

Wont turn off

This mentions ref/freezers but goes for both side by sides and just freezers alone:
This can be a tricky problem. There are three things that I can think of that can cause this. First is the defrost timer. To determine if this is the case look in the freezer at the freezer back wall. Is it cover completly with snow like ice? If so the timer is not letting the machine go into defrost. Also you should notice the fresh food part of the machine start to rise in temperature. The next thing is the machines cold control thermostat is faulty and even though the machine maybe cold enough the thermostat can't tell so it never kills power to the compressor. The last is that your machine is low on freon, so the freezer temperature never really gets low enough. Signs of this are decrease in ice maker production, ice cream softer than normal, or put a thermometer in t he freezer. The temperature should be around 0 degrees F and no more that 5 degrees F

Water on floor under unit & ice bottom of freezer

By going online, saw several posts re this problem. In short, the water drain was clogged and there was also a problem with the defrost timer. Service man blew out the drain line with compressed air and installed a new timer. Voila! Problem fixed. Interestingly, the serviceman found a wad of what looked like putty, but was sticky like gum in the drain area. He said he had never encountered anything similar.

Side by side fridge not cooling, not making ice

if it seems like the evaporator is getting cold then your sealed system should appear to be ok. you need the evap fan to transfer cold air into fresh food section. if not turning u need to replace fan motor. make sure your not getting to much frost build up on the evap.

Freezer seems as if it is not cold enough

Your sensor is packed in ice and giving false reading (always frozen)

You NEED to defrost. Will take 2hr

Turn off or Pull plug on freezer
Take everything out and put in cooler, brown bags, large bin or boxes to stay cold
Defrost by setting large pail of boiling water in each side bottom of freezer and closing door(s) for 1/2hr
Open freezer, empty pails in sink and use pails to hold large chunks of ice from freezer that will come out easily
Toss out ice chunks
Check sensor to be sure it is no longer packed in ice
Wipe down interior dry
close doors
plug in
wait 1/2hr
reload with stuff you want to keep
Done!

Freezer not cooling enough to make ice.

well countney778 it sounds like either your drain is clogged upo and holding water in the freezer or your defrost timer is bad. the timer shoiuld be by the thermostat area and the drain is at the boittom of the coil that is currently freezing. also look underneith and if you see abunch of dirt then you may have to clean the coil on the bottom of the unit. use a shop vac and a long brush to clean.

You did all the right things!!

But this sounds like a bad thermostat.
or a bad control switch.
