If the plastic blue clip on your Oreck Magnesium vacuum cleaner has broken, you will need to replace it to keep the bag securely attached to the vacuum. Here are the steps to replace the clip:
Locate the broken clip. It is usually located on the underside of the vacuum, near the bag opening.
Remove the broken clip by gently prying it off with a flat-head screwdriver or a similar tool. Be careful not to damage the surrounding area.
Obtain a replacement clip. You may be able to purchase a replacement clip from an Oreck dealer or online retailer.
Attach the replacement clip to the vacuum. The clip should snap into place and hold the bag securely.
Test the clip to make sure it is properly attached and holding the bag securely.
You've probably tried all this but humor me, check the plug to make sure it's not loose, make sure the terminals at least feel like they're tight and still connected, the walk down the cord (unplugged), hand over hand to make sure there aren't any bulges or shallow feeling spots showing a problem in the wiring.
I would guess there is a fair amount of problems with the foot switch, but I don't know this, after plugging back in, slap the switch with your hand vigorously a few times, if corrosion or a fault is present, this might wake it up, at least give you an idea of where to head next if it tries to run.
Same thing just happened here. I know there's three plastic tabs that need depressing inside the wheel to get the wheel off but so far, I haven't found enough of the right tools to get all pressed long enough to remove.
I know there shouldn't be any "just push the button and let it retract"------at 100 mph, anymore, which is what caused the issue with this one.
I hope someone posts a quick fix, otherwise this thing is living with an extension cord attached.
Look up the local Oreck store in your city/town. They carry most of the parts to repair an Oreck. I have a similar model and found the store near me has everything. You can even bring them your unit so they can see exactly what you need. You only have to pay for the part(s) needed and reassemble everything yourself.
(1) Rear wheels will get hair or thread wrapped around axles, dust, etc. and be hard to turn. Make sure each wheel turns easily.
(2) Small wheels on newer models (since about 1997-98) toward front are worn, missing or have same problem as item 1.
(3) Brush roll not turning. The brush roll actually helps pull this unit along the floor, as it rotates in the "forward" direction. If the belt broke, and you do not realize it, it may suddenly seem harder to push.

Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Classic. It sounds like the belt may be stretched out and my needs replacing. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Also check the brushroll, the gray bearing ends with say on either side the words NEW or OLD and both ends need to be identical – new/new and old/old NOT new/old, if the belt and the brushroll are OK then it may be the motor but I don’t think so. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.oreck.com/Customer Service1-800-989-3535 Monday thru Friday Hours are: 7:00 am to 7:00 pm CST Saturday and Sunday Hours Are; 8:00 am to 4:30 pm CST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead.
