The amount of liquid is programmable but you have to have a working flow meter. Do you get the right amount when doing a single or double espresso? Read the instructions to reprogram the amount of liquid when using the ESE pods which are most likely single shots. If the memory functions does not work then most likely you have a faulty flow meter which is not too difficult to replace and costs < $20,

I cant get my Gaggia Classic to work with pods

You need to use the single-serving size one-hole basket, not the double, with the diffuser valve seated beneath the basket. Then the Illy ese pod should be inserted with the decal facing up. Finally, and most importantly, when you lock the filter assembly into the machine, you need to close it firmly. Brown water can mean that the basket assembly is not sealed in tight enough.

I have a Gaggia classic and want to use pods. I've got Illy ese pods and the right (one hole pressurised basket) but still get just brown water. Can anyone help please?

I HAVE BEEN USING THE GAGGIA CLASSIC FOR 34 YEARS AND I ALWAYS BELIEVED THIS MACHINE IS BEING DESIGNED FOR SPECIFIC COFFEE QUALITY. THE ILLY ESE PODS ARE NOT FOR THIS MACHINE, TRY LAVAZZA PODS INSTEAD THAT IS SHAPED PERFECTLY WITH GAGGIA FILTER HOLDER FOR PODS.

When i place pod into machine it doesnt have any water or coffee come through when i switch it on

A few initial steps:
  • Insure that the water reservoir is full, and that the machine is plugged in.
  • Check the water inlet tube for kinks.
  • Ensure that you are using the correct portafilter or insert for ESE pods.
Here is a link to the manual.

I had the same problem and fixed by replacing the pressure valves which are two units in series.

Francis Francis X1 blowing thru ESE pod

Check the group head shower, make sure it does not have any defects(cracks, scratches or unusually large holes).

I get the same amount of water through the espresso side whether I choose 1 cup or 2 cups. So if I use the one cup espresso holder & that much espresso it is watered down.

In a properly working machine you should get about 50 ml (1.5 ounces) for the single and about 100 ml for the double. The amount is also programmable and just about the only way to get the same amount is to program both to deliver the same amount. The unit has a flow meter to accurately measure the amount of water going to the espresso. Try the program function to reset the amount for single and double.

In my case the problem was a faulty flow meter. I replaced the flow meter and the unit now works great! The microcontroller expects water flow information to deliver the right amount of liquid. If the unit is not getting flow information it will stop and start blinking.

Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine

Are you tamping the coffee at all?

The ground coffee needs to be compressed, using a tamper, to form a hard puck that the water will then get squeezed through.

This has already happened to the ese pods so needs to be replicated in the portafilter when you place freshly ground coffee into it.

The plastic tampers provided with your machine are not fit for purpose and a metal tamper is highly recommended. The base of the tamper should be 58mm
