Impossible to know without communicating with Sunbeam. "ER, ERR" and the like are normal failure mode displays whenever the unit can not operate as normal. As there are electronic components involved, a failure of any one will fault the unit.
And it could also be something as trivial as a buildup of scale on the water sensors. (Have you tried a thorough cleaning of the unit?) I would first try soaking the water chamber in white vinegar for several hours.
It that does not fix it, it's probably done for.

Tanks are no longer available. Search for used units on your local craigslist.com. This model was previously made by Holmes and tanks were the same on HM3500, HM3501. Search "Holmes humidifier" then search "sunbeam humidifier" on your local craigslist.org

most bigger towns will have one or two show up. Keep an eye out. People who move to a house (or install) a whole house humidifier sell their old units. We have two of the exact model and I bought a new in box 3501 from a Craigslist posting in September 2013!

if you mean by stone build up, you need a de scaler such as clr from any hardware store. let it soak on the crusty parts overnight the rinse well with water. toothbrush helps too.
