Things you can try; right click on speaker icon at lower right of screen in task bar, is there a red x on it? Click on playback devices. you dhould have "realtek' or "hd sound device", etc.. You should have a green check on left side and power bars on right. Right click on device, and you should see "disable". If you see "enable" click on that and exit. Right click on devoce again and click on "open sound mixer" and adjust your volume. You can also try ; clixk "start" find and click on "control panel". In your list (icons) click on "device manager", open and click on continue. Click on the box with + next to "sound audioand game controllers". You shpuld have a drop down with your device. Right click on it and you should see "disable". If you see "enable",click on that and exit. Right click on it again and click on "properties" tab. You should see "this device is working properly". Go to your speaker icon back in desktop and adjust your volume.
I could be of more service if you provide more details about your problem. It sounds like you have a VIA chipset with Realtek audio. If I can help you further let me know.
