Hi. You answered a question about a "sizzle" noise coming from the freezer of a GE Profile side-by-side. Your answer was "The sizzling in your case means that it is working....it is just water dripping from the cooling coil onto the hot element that defrosts it..." I just want to ask an additional question. We have turned off the water to the 'fridge, because it started leaking water onto the floor. And the ice maker quit about a year ago. And then yesterday, the "sizzle" noise started happening - which we had never heard before (we've lived here for 7 years) - and it stopped about 10 minutes after it started, and we haven't heard it again. So here's my question - do you think that these are all signs that just one thing is wrong with the fridge, or multiple things? Thanks!

The defrost cycle happens 1-2 times in 24 hours usually, and lasts 20-30 minutes.at which time the cooling process starts again.you may or may not hear the sizzle during the 20-30 minutes.if the frezer-freezes and the fresh food section is cold enough its probably o.k.

If you are sure the sound is coming from the freezer side, then yes you should empty the frrezer and take off the rear shield. While the heating element is normally encased in glass or plastic. Water droplets hitting an electrical connection could also cause a sizzling sound.

Sounds like water is dripping on a hot burner. I looked in the freezer trying to detect where the noise was coming from. I pulled out one of the baskets to see that it looks like red hot burner is on...

Yes , you are correct . The defrost heater is in a glass tube , which protects the actual heater coil . The " psh psh " Is the defrost water dripping onto the glass from the evaporator . This is normal .

Ge armoire style condensation on freezer door

the condensation is due to a small amount of cold freezer air getting past the gasket. Warm the entire gasket up for a few minutes with a hair dryer and then close the door and keep it closed for 30 minutes. That will reshape your gasket and solve your problem.

Red glow (from defrost heater?) at bottom of rear panel in freezer

This is from the GE Appliance "Knowledge Database" Web site:

Refrigerator - Explanation Of Red Glow

In a no frost refrigerator, the defrost timer activates defrost heaters in the evaporator section (rear of freezer) which heat up and melt the frost off the evaporator coils. This process lasts for approximately 25-45 minutes and usually happens up to twice a day.

During this time, there will be no running sounds, no fan noise, and you may hear water dripping or sizzling as it hits the heaters. On side by side models, you may even be able to see an orange glow at the bottom of the freezer.

This is normal.
