This means there may be a paper or object like a paper clip inside the printer. Have you just had a paper jam?
Open the unit and inspect for paper or an object.
Follow the directions in the manual regarding saving any unprinted faxes, then disconnect power for ten seconds. Plug the unit back in. It should be working.
most ink jet printers are not made for any type of volume of more than a couple copies a day. my advise would be to donate this one and purchase a LASER jet printer. the cost to fix this is more than what it is worth.

There might be some paper left in the machine. Check the very edges espacially the left side (seeing from the front).
Another reason could be that the encoder strip isn t in right position or is stained from ink.
Anyway try the first solution first.
If you stll have trouble try to open the printer: http://www.fixya.com/support/t211210-brother_mfc845cw and have a close look to the encoder strip + disc (and look out for some paper in the edges... ;-))
