HP Deskjet 3420 driver issue in windows 2003 x64 edition

According to HP, this printer is not supported in Windows 8. Thus, if you are trying to connect using a Windows 8 PC, there are no drivers that are compatible. You may need a new printer. If you have an older operating system, you get go to the link below, select you operating system, and download the "Driver-Product Installation Software". Run this and follow the instructions top install the printer on your new PC.

There are no official drivers Win 7 avaliable for your AIO hp DJ 3420, but you can use an alternate compatible drivers for your model ie. hp DJ 3600 series. Read this link from hp Installing the Printer with an Alternate Driver in Windows 7 for a USB Cable Connection. Suggestions What have you tried to get Windows Update to work? I would suggest the following: Go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a printer, Local Printer, LPt1, etc...when the list of printers comes up select Windows Update. After several minutes the list of printers should be updated and the Deskjet 3600 should be in the updated list. (Also keep in mind to look under 'HP' section of the driver (hp 3600) list and not 'Hewlett Packard'). Cancel the install the wizard & select "hp 3600" drivers to install on your Win 7 system. Hope it helps.

From the forum this is in, I will assume that you are running Win2k3EE on your laptop. Your issue might be a compatability issue with the print drivers. HP is notorious for making bad print drivers (ever since their aquisition of Compaq...before that, they did rock-solid work IMHO). For this printer, you may want to 1) uninstall the printer and use the Windows printer install wizard, as opposed to the HP installer, or 2) see if HP does offer a Server 2003 specific driver. HP commonly includes a bunch of "junk" in their Deskjet print drivers because those printers are targeted to individual home users who will use XP or Vista. HP has Vista drivers for it on their website, so I would say yes. Download the software, run it, and follow the instructions.

Add a local printer

keep as LPT1

Click HP Deskjet 3600 series

Click next

Change name to HP Deskjet 3420

Dont print test page.

Bak to printers

Left click "properties"

Ports

Change to USB

Done:)
