Hi!

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you shouldn't need to use Nero at all to copy your files.
If you use Windows Explorer and locate the directory with your music files, you should be able to just do a copy and paste to a directory on your external harddrive.

Make a back up of your music on an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive

Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive
To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer
Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

Hi I'am currently trying to set up my new Verbatim usb 3.0 super speed desktop hard drive and iam finding it difficult to instal nero back up and i dont have a clue as to save my pictures and music onto it...

For backups of music/pictures, you can either user windows backup tool.
Or if you want to choose more specific files then, create a new folder within you new external HD and name it 'Back Up' within this folder create some more folders say Documents, Music and Pictures.
From here navigate to the files/Folders you want to backup and right click and copy them, next head back over to you backup folder we created and paste the files to the relevant folder whether its music pictures or documents.
If you need more just ask.

MY COMPUTER DIED. HOW DO I TRANSFER THE FILES FROM MY VERBATIM SMARTDISC FIRELITE 160 GB, USBFLB160' TO ANOTHER COMPUTER? THANKS...........................JOHN NICKERSON

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

The NERO software is most-commonly used to write to CD/DVD/BluRay recordable media.

With Mac OS, just "drag-and-drop" your files and folders onto the icon for the drive, to "copy" the files.

Connect the external drive.
Open 'My Computer'.
One of the icons should be associated with the external drive.
Double-click the icon to "open" the external drive, to show the files/folders on the drive.

The usual limit is exactly 2GB, not 1GB.
It's a limitation of the file-system used for the directory of the disk-drive, when formatted according to the 'FAT32' specifications.

So, copy all the files currently on the Verbatim to your disk-drive.
Then, "reformat" the external (not the "internal") disk-drive, using the 'NTFS' file-system. This file-system has a maximum-file-size limitation for one file that is _much_ larger than the capacity of your Verbatim.

Then, copy all the "saved" files back onto the Verbatim.

Finally, copy your "large" files onto the Verbatim.

You cannot switch file systems and keep the data, you can however backup your data and reformat your hd, then proceed to copy from the backup media to the reinstalled OS. there are many tools to do both task, I would recommend download a linux live cd and backup to your external drive from there, then just reinstall windows and format your drive with an NTFS partition. I hope this helps.

I have just purchased a Verbatim external hard drive

You can simply copy the contents of your HDD/s to your external drive, but bear in mind hidden files and 'read only' file will not be copied unless you change their attributes. This includes "Outlook Express" mail boxes. Or you can as you say, put a check the boxes.

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

This problem happens quite a bit with Windows Vista. It seems that Windows Vista puts a hidden file in the backup; which locks the device.

Open the external device (Windows 7 is fine). Click on "view hidden folders and files." Delete any hidden files you may have in the external.

Go back to "my computer" and right click on the external hard drive letter. Choose properties and security tab. Make your user-name as a main user (administrator) and disable the read only.

Reboot the computer and see if this works.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
