My Tempus Fugit grandfather clock stopped working. Every time I swing the pendulum, it stops later on. We moved it from the first floor to the middle of two stair cases. It stopped before we moved it but during the time we moved the clock, the mechanism fell down but not to the floor. It worked again but a few months later, it stopped. It was moved several times because of the rain water leak above the clock. Right now, it stopped.

SOURCE: I inherited a grandfather clock which runs slow

You have to adjust the bob on pendulum. If the clock is slow, the bob on the rod must be pushed up. If the clock is fast, the bob must be pushed down. Do adjustments bit by bit, day by day till the clock is keeping time. If all this does not work, you may need to replace suspension spring (if there is any). If there are no suspension spring, the clock may need proffessional attention.

SOURCE: the time and chimes are out of sync for our tempus

Turn the minute hand until the 16 westminster chime operate and then the hour strikes. Remove the minute hand and simple put it back on at the 12 o-clock position. The chimes should now be in sync.

1, Wind the clock. If the pendulum still does not swing, check the hands of the clock. If the hands are touching each other, push the hour hand gently toward the clock face. If the hands still touch, gently bend the minute hand away from the clock face.

2. Examine the swing of the pendulum. If it moves, and then stops, or if it swings erratically, the clock is probably off-balance. Gently tilt the clock to one side and restart the pendulum.
Watch the swing of the pendulum. If it stops again or continues to swing erratically, try tilting the clock in the opposite direction. Tilt the clock at various angles, on each side, and front and back, until the pendulum runs smoothly and regularly.

Note the clock position in which the pendulum swings freely. Place a wedge underneath the clock in the place needed to maintain this angle. If a wedge alone will not hold the Seth Thomas grandfather clock in the proper position, try lifting the clock slightly up against the wall.

Use a screwdriver to attach a bracket to the wall at the appropriate position. Additional brackets may be needed depending on the angle required. It may also be necessary to employ a combination of wedges and brackets.

Check that the hands are tight and also that they are not touching. and jamming. Remove the battery and replace it. Some have a lever to give it a jolt to get moving.

Is it possible to have a pendulum that is too heavy? The grand father clock is battery operated and the part that swings the pendulum will move back n forth when the pendulum is not on it. If the weight...

It is a handsome longcase clock and rather elaborate - it would be disappointing to discover the weights and pendulum are merely decorative.

I have only encountered one similar clock and it had one battery to keep the pendulum swinging and another to power the clock. The battery had to be fairly fresh or the pendulum stopped swinging. The clock also had to be level or the pendulum stopped.

If you took the picture when the pendulum was stationary, the clock appears not to be standing vertically. It is important they stand vertically in both planes to the nth degree.
There is also a fable about a clock never being happy standing next to or hanging on an exterior wall, sometimes not such a fable...

I don't think the pendulum is the problem. I suggest you should level the clock (considering the shape of the case a plumbline would be best), fit a new battery and give the pendulum a swing - if it doesn't keep swinging, there is probably a fault with the motor.

I purchased a Howard Miller grandfather clock and the clock is keeping time but pendulum is barely moving. What's the problem?

Hi Pam,
I have a Howard Miller Grandfather clock and the pendulum swings very slowly and from far left to far right travels only about three inches at best. It doesn't need to move any more than that to make the "Verge" move the "Escape Wheel" to rotate the gears to keep the hands moving at the correct tick.

I believe the grandfather clock I was given was over wound by the previous owner. Is there anyway that I can fix this myself so that it is affordable?

If you have the patience, you could try the following.
Set the pendulum in motion - this will slowly wind down the mainspring. The clock will probably stop after a few seconds. Set the pendulum swinging again as necessary, and if you're lucky the period that it ticks for will increase each time.
You will need to be patient and persevere - what you are doing is very gently releasing the tension on the mainspring.
This is not guaranteed to resolve the problem, but it won't harm the clock or your bank balance to try. Failing that, there is a mechanical fault that is causing it not to wind and you are strongly advised to place it in the hands of a reputable and competent clock repairer.

Most grandfather/grandmother clocks have an adjustable screw on the weight to slightly extend it or shorten it to satisfy the equation of pendulum swing. the shorter the swing (arc distance) the faster the clock, the longer the swing the longer the time. Check to see if you can adjust the weight up or down on the hanger.

Coaster model 900723 grandfather clock doesn't keep time

Everybody should know that the coaster clocks discussed here run on batteries. The timing mechanisms, the chimes as well as the pendulum all are powered by a battery. Changing the speed of the pendulum is impossible because there is no adjustment. Besides, it wouldn't matter anyway. The pendulum has now affect on the clock's ability to keep accurate time. It is purely aesthetic. This is a pretty cool looking clock and even has weights, but those are also purely aesthetic and do not move the way a classic grandfather clock weight would move. The moments with these clocks are not designed to be worked on. These clocks are relatively inexpensive (approximately $300) but do add a nice look to your home. Grandfather clocks snobs would say though; this is not a true timepiece. They're right... Sorry._1513.jpg

Bakelite antique mantle clock just bought, but no instructions of how to get it going. Ive got the key and pendulum but dont know how to set it up. Can you help?

First you have to wind up your clock using the key supplied. The pendulum suspension spring should start to swing quite fast. Stop it swinging with your fingers and hook up the pendulum. When done, push the pendulum to whatever side and release it to start the swing - the clock should start ticking in normal order. If there is no special bar on the back of clock movement for adjusting hands, then hands must be adjusted from the dial side by moving minute hand clockwise. Move the minute hand with your finger clockwise to the desired time, at the same time do not catch hour hand, as this may end up with the incorrect time displayed. Rate me, plz.
