How would the volume get stuck on zone 2 with a message of "vol fix". I've tried different resetting methods, but can't seem to get anything to work. The sound doesn't come out in zone 2 at all now. Help!
I have an RX-V659 receiver. I was helping a friend to connect a subwoofer to his receiver through the LFE out connection, and then calibrate the surround speakers using a soundmeter.
His receiver was initially using Zone 2 to power some in ceiling speakers in a couple different rooms and to pipe music from iTunes through the receiver to those speakers. He has those connected to Zone 2/Presence. All worked fine.
During the speaker setup and calibration I noticed that the rear speakers didn't show up in the setup as being connected. (He has 3 in front, L/R side, and L/R rear connected) I thought that was strange until I guessed that the L/R rear may not show up with Zone 2 on. It seemed like a good guess because when I turned off Zone 2 and went back into setup, indeed the rear L/R speakers showed up.
I calibrated the system and all was well for surround sound. All speakers and subwoofer worked fine.
Later, my friend went to turn on Zone 2 to listen to his speakers connected in the other room. No sound. No sound from any source.
I went back over to help troubleshoot. I figured that maybe the L/R rear speakers had to be set to none before Zone 2 would work. No go.
No combination of anything in the setup menus seemed to re-enable Zone 2. When pressing the Zone 2 button the led for Zone 2 turned on, but no sound came out of the speakers connected to Zone 2 regardless of the source. We could hear iTunes from the source in the primary zone, but we could get nothing from Zone 2.
I've read the manual, but I'm basically at a complete loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, if we connect the front three channels to pre-amp out and power them using an external amplifier will we still have to toggle Zone 2 off in order to use the L/R rear speakers or will the receiver automatically detect that there is enough power?
Thanks,
-James

The volume keys should be working by default, but you may have volume punch through turned on (meaning the remote is sending signals for TV or CABLE volume function no matter what mode you are actually on). To unlock volume control for AUX mode, do the following: 1. Press and release AUX 2. Press and hold SETUP until the remote blinks twice 3. Type 993 4. Press and release VOL- The remote should blink four times to confirm unlock.
Get the original Yamaha remote, go to Set menu, manual setup, speaker setup, and look for "extra speaker." it needs to be set to "zone 2." This is off the top of my head, so it should be pretty accurate. Get used to doing this, though, as this amplifier assignment to zone 2 is prone to resetting itself in those Yamahas.
i have the same problem. i have a rx-v661. i goto the zone 2 settings and try to change the volume and it says VOL FIX. I cannot hear anything out of zone 2. It takes the current volume that is in zone 2, but i cannot hear anything. it has been working fine for at least a year.

Good Luck! This worked for me.
We had the same problem - I think it was reset when the power went off in a storm. Went to Yamaha website (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/faq/faqdetail.html?CNTID=206010&CTID=5009135) and found the following worked:
Assigning the receivers internal amp for Zone 2:
Set the remote control [SIDE SELECTOR SWITCH] to [AMP]. (Located to the right of the volume buttons on the Remote).
Press the [SET MENU] button on the remote control.
Arrow down to Manual Setup and press the [ENTER] button on the remote control.
Arrow to the Sound Menu option and press the [ENTER] button on the remote control.
Arrow to Speaker Set and press the [ENTER] button on the remote control.
Arrow to the EXTRA SP ASSIGN and select ZONE2
Press the [RETURN] button on the remote control to exit out and return to the Manual Setup.
