You need to set up your pen assignments in Autocad, have you done this? ie, Pen1 is 0,25 black, pen2 is 0,35 blue etc, etc. If this is not done you will have problems with colours and line thickness's.
Has this USB to Centronics cable worked in the past, but has now stopped? The reason I ask is that there are two kinds of parallel ports, and so two kinds of USB-to-Centronics adapators. One is unidirectional, and one is bidirectional. If your plotter requires bidirectional, then it won't work properly with unidirectional.
This could be one of a number of things. The file being sent must be smaller than the total memory of the printer. Connect the computer directly to the plotter with a parallel printer cable and see if it prints. If you are using an OS newer than XP, try using the XP 32 bit driver. If you are printing from AutoCad 14 or older, upgrade AutoCad (newer uses Windows printer drivers). If you can print OK with the parallel cable, get new external JetDirect software from the HP website.
If you are using Windows Vista OS, then you know that you do not have the complete drivers that should make all the features of the plotter work ok. It is recommended that you go for XP or 2000. That way, better results including fonts are achieved. Remember also that this model is old and may not really work very well with all the features in Autocad 2009 Version. You can try the plotter on a machine running on 2007 version. Good luck
Here is the drivers page if you need a new set:

my hp 450c plotter works properly in vista. First I' ve tried unsuccesfully to add new printer through windows menu. Then through Autocad menu (plotter manager) I added the specific plotter.
replace the network card, then reconfigure the IP address in the machine and that should take care of you. if not then you could have a bad emod (electronics module). also check the cat5 cable and the network drop for functionality.
