I have bought a second hand garmin, and the owner gave me the manual and free US navigation map. Recently he also provided me the 25 digit unlock code, but I cannot register or unlock maps, cos when i try to register an account it is always say invalid user id or password. How to fix this?

When you mean does not work, does the unit power up or is it plain dead? If it does not turn on, then you will need to troubleshoot or send out for repair.

If it turns on, but does not provide you with maps, you need to load maps for Australia as you currently have US maps loaded on the device.

Google search for Australia maps for your unit, or contact Garmin customer service.

It is possible that problem may have been created because of the way Map subscriptions work. I'll verify but my latest theory is that you may have to unlock every update not just the map set. I have 4 Garmin GPS units, all 4 units use the same map sets (City Navigator - North America), and I have 4 City Navigator Unlock Codes. Plus I have 2 City Navigator Map Subscriptions that provide quarterly updates. Keeping track of Update Codes is a PIA. It is possible that each quarterly update also needs to go through the Unlock process. Apparently MapInstall doesn't do that automatically. Here are Garmin Instructions on How to unlock Garmin maps. If I am reading correctly, You have to manually add the update code to MapInstall every time you get a Quarterly Update.

It is more than a little disheartening to call Garmin Tech Support because the standard greeting seems to be "your expected wait will be over 30 minutes". That would send me to web site but I had already been there and saw no information to help with the "Maps Can't Unlock" error that was driving me crazy

You are out of luck. Garmin will only talk to and assist registered owners. The registered owner has to deregister the device before a new owner register it and update the maps.

I wanted to add maps to my 250W. I found the maps I wanted on a Torrent. However, many searches around various forums never revealed how to install these. Found the following through reading and experimentation.

1. Downoaded map image file GMAPSUPP.IMG. Download also gave me "Use code XXX when generating unlock code for maps"
2. Downloaded Garmin Unlock Generator 1.3 by JetMouse
3. Looked on my GPS to find the UnitID
4. Entered the UnitID into Garmin Unlock Generator. Ignore the GM XT device unlock code and the top Generate button.
5. Selected Map Product as Custom and entered the code given for the downloaded image file.
6. Hit the bottom create button to generate a 25 digit code.
7. Download Img2Gps and run
8. Click Load Folder to load the image file. Select the tick next to it.
9. Check the Use Unlock Key option and paste the 25 digit code in.
10. Load a blank SD card into your Garmin
11. Connect the Garmin to your PC using a USB cable. You should see two dirves in windows: one is the Garmin and the other is the "Removable Disk" SD card.
12. Create a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card
13. Select Folder/Card in Img2GPS
14. Click "Copy Maps". Select the folder /Garmin on the SD card. You may need to click copy again.
15. Upload will take a while.
16. You should now see a file GMAPSUPP.IMG on the SD card in the /Garmin directory.
17. Create a new text file called GMAPSUPP.UNL in the same directory (make sure it does not have a hidden .txt extension).
18 copy the 25 digit unlock key into this file.
19. Close the file.
20. Disconnect the Garmin.
21. On Startup it should load your original maps and the new ones.

you will need to erase a file from the units memory. Connect your GPS system to your computer; go to start then ‘My Computer’, and double click on your device file (mass storage system), there you will see a folder named ‘Garmin’. In this folder are several different files, look for file named gmapsupp.img. Right hand click on this file and delete as this file is causing the maps to lock.

I finally downloaded the jetmouse v1.3 key generator and the key it provided worked perfectly. I installed the map on my GPS and now I can drive around Taiwan like a local; always knowing where I am going. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetness.

i have a garmin 360 and dont now the pass word is their any way to unlock it with out nowing the password

Did you buy the unlock key from garmin? You need this key to be able to use the maps on a specific gps (serial number) so when you update maps, you type in this unlock key and the maps are unlocked on the gps. There is a page about this on the garmin website

Do you run the software with administrative rights? If you do, I have no suggestion...
