I purchased a Brother MFC-8440 second hand and I get an error message that says Clean the corona wire of the drum. What's a corona wire and where is the drum.
I have this problem too and I have done slid the blue tab a gazillion times to no avail. I did some troubleshooting and manually rolled the mechanism inside and used a cotton swab to remove dust, etc. This worked for about 5 printed pages and then no longer prints with the same message. I checked the drum life and it says 100% ? ? The unit is original, about 4 years old, and I was thinking the drum unit needed replaced but don't want to do it if I don't have to. ANY help would be soooo appreciated!! Thanks!

The drum is the larger plastic unit that slides out an the toner cartridge fits into it. The corona wire is the very fine wire at the front top of the drum. Just slide the little cleaning tab back and forth.

The drum unit may be at it's end. There is a report you can print that will say "Drum" life at the bottom of the page. I think it's the "User Settings" or something. Though it sounds like you can't print to find this out anyway....Do you recall how many times you've changed the toner without changing the drum? Usually you can expect about 4-5 toners on every drum. Once the drum's photo sensitive coating wears off it is incapable of charging correctly to print. Might just be time for regular maintenance. [email protected] with questions.
The drum is the photosensitive roller that the image is charged onto so I'm afraid cleaning the corona wire won't help. If the drum is removeable try reseating it, otherwise it looks like you may need to buy a new drum kit for it.
this printer has 6 Drum, check all, and look internal counters is available on the menu they are down counters. If Continues go the Brother Repair Center, for repair.
from the brother website... Description of Problem 100000015035 How do I clear the message PLS CLEAN DRUM from the display?
Description of Solution 200000019400 Dust
or toner on the corona wire may cause this error message to appear on
the display. To clean the corona wire, follow the instructions
listedbelow. NOTE:
Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic drumunits
and/or toner cartridges, or refill their Brother toner cartridge. Each
Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that
are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each
individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure
quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the
hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The
Brotherlimited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by
the useof unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or
toner. 1. Open the front cover (below the paper ejection tray) by pulling the taps on the left and right side of the unit towards you. 2. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. 3. Place the drum unit on a drop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner. 4.
Clean the corona wire inside the drum by gently sliding the blue tap
(located on the top left side of the drum unit) from side to side 7 or 8 times. 5.
Return the tab to the home position (left side of drum). It should
click into place. NOTE: If the tab is not at the Home position,
printedpages may have vertical stripes. 6. Reinstall the drum unit. 7. Close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.
Usually when it prints light on one side and normal on the other, it's either the drum (which you replaced) a dirty corona wire, or the toner is unevenly distributed in the cartridge. You can removed the toner cartridge and gently drop it from a distance of about 4-5 inches to dislodge any caked up toner. This is normal in a cartridge that has sat a while or if the fax machine is in a room with high humidity. Hope this answers your question and best of luck. Greg
Did you replace the drum or the toner cart? The drum has a blue lever that you slide back and forth around 20 times to clean the corona wire. I sometimes use a cotton swab with alcohol to gently clean this wire as well.
Yes, you should replace the drum unit if you have not done so. You may have a broken corona wire or drum. However, keep in mind that you will need to reset your machine after changing the drum unit. If after replacing, you still get the same error, you may have a problem with your machine properly sensing your drum unit.
