From your handset, you just have to press the mute button, your phone should start telling you the time, date, ect. press the #5 key and then the #8 key and start recording your message. When finished press the # 8 key again. Hope this helps

I need to know how to retrieve my messages when not home. I have the Southwestern Bell Freedom Answering Machine Model No. FA 972. Thank you.

Call your phone, let the outgoing message play when the machine answers, and wait for the beep. After the beep, enter the 3-digit security code you'll find on a sticker on the bottom of the machine. The machine will beep twice to let you know you entered the right code and it's ready for your commands.

Remote commands:

1# Plays messages in mailbox 1
2# Plays messages in mailbox 2
3# Deletes old messages (you need to play them all back first)
7# Starts recording a new outgoing message (press 7# again to stop recording)
9# Turn the system on or off
0# Monitor the room

While you're playing messages (you pressed either 1# or 2#) you have these commands:

3# Erase current message
6# Repeat previous message
7# Skip to next message
8# Repeat current message
## Stop playback

After your messages have played, you have 20 seconds to enter another command before the machine disconnects automatically.

You can download the manual here so you'll have a copy for future reference.

My answer phone is full up,but it has my mum on there who died recently,i only want to delete all the other,s but not my mum,but i cant see a way to do this can any clever person help me please xx

Thanks for visiting FixYa!

First, I'm sorry for your loss. I recently lost my mother, too.

Let's see if I can help. First, you need to know if you can call your answering machine from another number and remotely listen to the messages. You'll need your answering machine's user guide if you don't know the code to enter when your answering machine answers the call.

If you can remotely access the machine from another phone, you'll need a call recorder. These can be found at most local electronic shops or eBay. (See link below)

(I noticed you referred to *********** as "my mum " - so I'm guessing you may be in the UK.?) I'm in the US. So, this link is to eBay in the US but it will give you an idea what you're looking for.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Phone-Recorder-record-telephone-call-pc-computer-bug-/200585416756?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2eb3d29034

or here:

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=call+recorder&_sacat=See-All-Categories

Now, with a voice recorder, you can call your answering machine remotely from another phone - enter the code to retrieve your messages - record the messages you want to keep - and erase what's on the answering machine.

Code to retrieve messages

Here are the instructions you need to follow:

If you want to be able to play your messages from a remote location, you need to enter a two-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) code (01-99).
To select a PIN, perform the following steps:
1) With the phone in standby, press [menu/clock] twice.
The system announces "Security code," and the current PIN code is announced as it is displayed on the base.
Then the system announces the instructions for setting the PIN code.
2) Press [volume/select/ ] or [volume/select/ ] until the desired number appears.
3) Press [set] to select the PIN code. You hear a confirmation tone, then the announcement "Security code" followed by the new PIN code is announced. After a few seconds, the system announces "To set ring time, press menu again."
Note: The PIN code is set to "80" at the factory.

Remote Operation
When you are away from home, you can operate your answering machine with any touch-tone telephone. Use this function to check for recorded messages, to play or delete messages, even record a new greeting message.
1) Call your telephone number.
2) During the greeting message, press [0] and enter your PIN code
3) The answering machine announces the current time and the number of messages stored in memory. Then you hear "To play incoming message, press zero two. For help, press one zero."
4) You may continue to listen to the voice prompts, or you may select a command from the following chart:
Command Function Command Function
[0] then [1] Repeat a Message [0] then [6] Answering Machine On
[0] then [2] Play Incoming Messages [0] then [7] Memo Record/Stop*
[0] then [3] Skip a Message [0] then [8] Greeting Message Record/Stop*
[0] then [4] Delete a Message [0] then [9] Answering Machine Off
[0] then [5] Stop Operation [1] then [0] Voice Prompts
* For Memo Record and Greeting Message Record functions, the first time you enter the corresponding command, it
starts the Recording function. If you want to stop the recording, enter the command again.
Note: Once you enter the remote access menu, you must enter a command within 15 seconds, or the
answering machine automatically hangs up and returns to standby.
5) After all of the voice prompts have been played, you hear intermittent beeps indicating that the system is in the
command waiting mode. You may enter another command at this time from the chart.
6) When you are finished, hang up to exit the system. The answering machine automatically returns to standby.

Turn on the Answering Machine Remotely
If you have forgotten to turn on your answering machine, you can turn it on remotely from any touch-tone telephone.
1) Call your telephone number.
2) Wait ten rings until the system answers. You hear intermittent beeps.
3) Press [0] and then enter your PIN code. The answering machine announces the number of messages stored in memory. You hear "To play incoming message, press zero two. For help, press one zero."
4) Press [0] then [6] to turn the answering machine On. You hear the outgoing message and a confirmation tone.
5) Hang up the phone; subsequent calls will be answered by the system.

Remote access, panasonic cordless phone and answering machine

I phoned in from another phone and retrieved my messages. The problem was not with the answering machine but with the phone and calling card I had been using. Don't use a hotel switch board nor calling card, too many intermediate parties for the 2 digit code to work with.
