Zenith sets, like most others now, are adjusted electronically through a service menu. You'll need your original remote control (or a Zenith-brand universal replacement with a MENU key) to access the menu. Press and hold the MENU button until the channel number and time display goes away, then press 9, 8 , 7, 6, ENTER. This puts you into service mode.
In service mode, CHANNEL UP and CHANNEL DOWN move through the different settings, and VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN change the values. Make sure you write down the original value of anything before you change it so you can put it back if necessary. One of the reasons the manufacturers hide the service menu is because the set can be damaged by incorrect settings to some of the parameters.
On some models, you can't get to all the parameters unless you change
one called F MODE from 00 to 01. You might need to do this on yours.
The list of parameters varies by model and features. I haven't worked on a Zenith in a long time so I don't remember exactly what yours says, but you want to find two settings for V SIZE (vertical size) and V POS (vertical position). Adjust the size first by lowering the value until the top and bottom of the screen are black. Then adjust the position so the picture is centered (black strips close to equal size). Finally, increase the size until the picture fills the screen again. It's normal to adjust for a little overscan, meaning you push the top and bottom a little bit out of view. If you stop too soon, on some channels you might see flashing lines at the top of the picture.
When you're finished adjusting, turn the TV off to exit service mode. If you needed to change the F MODE setting, put it back to 00 first. Your picture should be properly sized after all this.
I pushed the menu button on the original remote control and held it down. The channel number and time display doesn't even show up, so it is impossible to wait for it to disappear. I tried pushing the 9876 enter into the remote but it does nothing.
You posted this under a Zenith TV heading so I assumed that's what you have. Is your TV actually a Zenith? The steps I gave are in fact the way to access Zenith's service menu. Do you know that your remote control is working correctly? Is it set for TV mode? The original remote was multi-function.
Like I said it's been a while. As long as the menu comes up, the remote is working. OK, I guess both my feet are firmly in my mouth. Hold that button down until the on-screen menu disappears, then enter 9, 8, 7, 6. Yeah, the menu comes up when you push the button. The channel and time are displayed when you press the DISPLAY button. Let me know if that works for you. Thanks for sticking with me as I make a fool of myself.

The remote is working fine, and it is set for TV mode. When I push the menu button and hold it down, all that happens is the actual menu comes up and stays there. The only time that the channel number and time appears is when u switch channels, and it appears for about 5 seconds and then disappear. Whenever is punch in the numbers 9876 all it does is put into the channel number! Confused I am.
I am still not gaining, u did not say if after the on-screen menu disappears, if you keep your finger on the menu button while pressing the 9876 and enter or release your finger and press 9876 and enter. I tried it both ways, if I relase the menu button, it simply tries to turn the channel to 76, if I hold it down the various normal menu items just keep rotating, but no service menu. Aaaaaahhhh!!
