Does your blank ink cartrdige filled with ink?
Or before you print Click on the Properties button. Click the Color Tab\Print in Grayscale\Black ink only

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent inkdrying out in the print head nozzles. If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages,then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive. It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer thanreplace the print head.
The printer head is my be block. In these situation you need to wash the printer head with cleaner., and the same time push some amonia solution with the seringe through the black ink output pin gentaly. Then re assamble and turn on the printer .

try to clean the ink print head cartridges also its trailing (belt, pulleys) you can reach. a dirty ead may cause that or better check it to printer solution software, there you can test, align, clean printhead.
Print a self-test page 1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper. 2. Press the * and # keys at the same time and then press 1, 2, and 7 . 3. Press the Right-arrow key to select Reports and then press the OK . 4. Press the Left-arrow key and select the vpp self test . The test page prints. That will help narrow down the problem. If it prints black on the test page, we know it is something to do with the software. its bcoz u have a win 7 and ur driver version is preety old for win 7 to recognize..
kindly visit canon website and download the latest driver required...
This maybe in the manual under ink tank replacement, most cannons have this, but keep in mind that sometimes the ink feed tubes to the print head get clogged and then the printer will report no ink at all, these cansometimes be cleaned by soaking them in acholol
I have a Epson Stylus photo printer that I keep turned off . I turn it on only when I want to print something which is seldom.From a cold start mine takes over the two moinutes going through some sort of routine. I have had and used this printer through three sets of ink and it has always been this way. My other realy old Tractor feed "pin printer" I turn on and print as soon as it as it starts. I think the new printers warm up and go through that routine. I believe it to be normal, Yes.
Even if it is on it stll take much more time that the ribbon one.
