Tip & How-To about Audio Players & Recorders

How to easily check your speakers and speaker wires

When in doubt about your audio speaker wiring, or if you think that one of your speakers might have stopped working, here is a cheap, accurate way of checking the speaker or the speaker wire. Take a regular 9 volt battery (like those used in smoke alarms) and touch the terminals to both wires of your speakers (disconnect from amp first), if you hear a pop in the speaker, the wires are good, To test individual speakers, touch the battery terminals to the speaker terninals and listen for a pop sound. If you can see the cone of the speaker you can also determine which pole is + and which is - by watching which way the cone moves, If the cone moves out you have the positive + battery terminal on the plus speaker pole. and vice versa. This battery test is safe for you speakers. If you do this kind of audio work, always carry a fresh 9 volt battery in your tool box.

Internal speakers won't turn off when external audio is connected

Normally , you would expect the TV sound to stop when headphones are plugged in. Obviously not in this case. If you have a set of headphones, try them and see if the TV still has speakers on. If it does, then there may be a setting on the setup of the TV to get headphones to work. If the TV speakers stop, then I would think that the Logitech are not compatible with the TV. The only other thing would be is to get into the TV and disconnect the TV,s own speakers. If the wires are soldered on and not terminal connected, carefully cut 1 of the wires off near the speaker. If 1 wire is cut, the speaker wont work. Make sure both the TV and the additional speakers (If they have their own power supply) you are using are unplugged from the power before you go doing this...!

Surround Speakers will not work

Perhaps you have the live wire in the wrong connector from the speakers? They should be color coded. I would check that first. And if you have moved, they are most likely in different positions, you'll have to rerun the audio setup for the surround sound. You should have a separate microphone to use for that that plugs in to the system.
