The little red light is likely from the red LED underneath your optical mouse. If the mouse cursor/pointer on the screen is jerky, it may mean the mouse pad is dirty and/or if the mouse is wireless, its battery is low and should be replaced. Most laptops have a touchpad as part of the keyboard. If you want to use that instead of a physical mouse, just put the physical mouse away and use the touchpad. Both should be active unless the touchpad was disabled. If the touchpad is disabled, you can re-enable it by clicking on control panel > mouse > device settings tab > enable button.

How do I disabled the touch pad and only use an external mouse and the keyboard on the lap top?

You do not have to actually disable the touch pad on this laptop to use an "external" mouse. Just plug in your mouse and it will install the drivers if needed and viola, your good to go. If you insist on disabling your touch pad however, you can do that by double tapping the top left hand corner, when you do this correctly, a little orange light will show and the screen will show a notification the the touch pad is disabled. To enable the pad back on, just repeat the same step you used to disable, and the on screen notification will indicate the touch pad is enabled!

Touchpad and extern mouse working at the same time. Very annoying. Have tried all i can to disable the touchpad. Have an Compaq Presario CQ62

Try this website to down load a .pdf manual for your laptop.

Look closely at the touch pad, in the top left hand corner of the pad you should see a little white led shining away.

Tap the led twice, it should turn orange, you've disabled your touch pad, to re-activate it, tap it twice again, this should bring the white led back on.

How can disable touchpad of my COMPAQ Presario CQ42 laptop

On most Compaq's of the CQ42 model type, there should be a little light on the top right hand corner of the touchpad, not much bigger than a pinhead. When the touchpad is active the light is out so you shouldn't see the lamp. Quickly double tap the area on the lamp and it should light up. This is an indication that the touchpad is now not active.

Mouse pad does not work. have tried holding down function key and then pushing F7 key. nothing

If its a Compaq then there is a mouse pad power button at the very top of the pad. If not it may be disabled in the bios and needs be enabled for use. It is not uncommon for a user to disable the mouse pad on a laptop they r annoying.

Can I disable the touchpad double click feature on

You can go to the control panel and click on Mouse. Look at the top tab and click on settings. The window that comes up shoes the touchpad device, highlight it and click on the settings button. Look at the list of options and click on tapping. Look for the little box and uncheck if it says enable tapping. This will disable the tapping function of the pad, so you will only be able to scroll with the pad and click with the buttons. Click apply and ok.

Touch pad

First check if your Synaptics Touchpad is well configured in System Panel ---> Hardware, under "another pointing devices".
If so, then go to Control Panel ---> Mouse ---> Synaptics Touchpad. There you can enable/disable properties.
To get the pad properly setup, you should try to download and install te SP21661 pack from HP/Compaq, that pack comes with all the features you can use, very useful for W2K & WinXP.
