What make and model product?

Could the Child Lock feature be active on the microwave? If it is active, there may be a "box" symbol formed by the LCDs in the display. Try pressing and holding the Stop/Clear button for 3 seconds (or a little more). You should hear a long beep and the clock should return to the display (if it was set).

I do not have the DMW1153. However, I assume the DMW1158 is similar. The manual for the DMW1158 is here: http://www.danby.ca/cms/uploads/products/en_manual/DMW1158BL_EFOM2_%28web%29.pdf . The microwave oven has a manufacture defective and should be returned to the store, this is something that cannot be addressed.

The child lock is on. Turn off the lock by pressing and holding 0 until the word Locked disappears.

To turn on the lock, press Stop/Clear and then press and hold 0 until the phrase appears.

Yes! the items built today don't have the quality of yesterday, the only solution is have the person who originally bought the toaster take it back for a exchange providing there is still warranty on the product. But even If the warranty is gone I think a visit to see the store manager would be order they don't like the bad publicity especially if the store is full of prospective buyers.

I suggest you have a written communication with them... That will help you if you want to pursue the case with consumer forum :-)
