You should be able to get XP 32-bit SP3 added. However, Windows Update will not work with XP SP2. Thus you will need to manually download the update and then install it. This is the link to the update: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 . Click on the Download button. This is the version usually used for computers that aren't on a network.
I hope this helps.
Cindy Wells (the Acer 1640z came with XP SP2; most computer companies support all of the service packs for their originally installed OS.)
Most of the newer routers use a newer type of encryption (WPA or WPA2) which is not supported by older 802.11b hardware.
Either set the Linksys router to use WEP encryption, or get a newer 802.11g card for the old laptop which can use WPA or WPA2 encryption.
Older versions of Windows XP also need to be upgraded to Service Pack 3 or apply this patch: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=662bb74d-e7c1-48d6-95ee-1459234f4483&displaylang=en
Plug your internet into the router then, the router to the computer. Go to your network settings and run the network setup. This will change the settings in windows to except the router into the network. You may have to restart the computer. This should give you internet access to your computer through your router.
If you want to use Windows Wireless Zero
Configuration to manage the wireless network, you will need to have
Windows XP with service pack 2 as a minimum.
With Windows XP and SP2, you will need a Microsoft update for WPA2 that can be obtained from:
After installation you will need to use the Windows Zero Config wireless
configuration in the control panel to configure the adapter. WPA2
should now be available and work correctly.
Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and Windows Vista offer support for WPA2 without additional updates.
From what you're saying I get that you want to install Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on your computer. Are you wanting to replace Vista, or do you want a dual boot system? Do you have a Vista CD as well if you want a dual boot system? Did you receive any other disc's with the computer that may have a driver set on it?
If you use your original Win XP disks, there's a chance you now have XP SP1 (Service Pack 1). Make sure you've made all the necessary Windows Updates as working with WiFi networks was enhanced with XP SP2.
Then you can try to find your wireless network and connect to it. If you had a secured network you'll need your previous network key (similar to a password, but without a username, the wireless key is needed to exchange data with the router)
If you can't remember the settings on your Linksys you can reset it to factory settings with inserting something into the reset hole to press the hidden buton and holding it for several seconds until lights on the front flash. Then you HAVE to run the initial install procedure (find your CD and Quick Start sheet) because your router will be open and unsecured.
