Take the memory card out of your camera. Hold it in your right hand. On the left side you will see a very small slider switch. It will probably be in the down position. Slide it to the up position and see what happens. This switch toggles the card between Read/Write and Read Only. If it is on read only it locks the card.

Inside the camera, check the brass contacts where the battery connects to the camera. Clean it with rubbing alcohol (use a cotton swab) and try to turn it on after insterting the battery.
Depending on your OS, you can download the latest driver for your system directly from Canon here. Remember to select your OS in the dropdown tab to be able to see the available downloads.
But I'd also recommend that you take this as an opportunity to consider utilizing a much safer method of downloading your pictures and videos. Please see this link, as it describes the use of a USB card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. Note that card readers are also VERY inexpensive these days (some places less than $2 online with shipping).
Yes I would send it back if possible. It will cost about $50 for a fix. Some of these fairly new cameras wear out quick. It is usually due to a worn out lens or zoom motor. They also have a tendency to stick causing the camera to turn off or not turn on at all. Also a fualty memory card or contaminated memory card contact point will do the same. You can clean the points with cotton swaband rubbing alcohol.
You may have bent or broken contacts inside the card slot. It's tough to see, but if you look deep inside the slot, you may notice a contact bent or broken. If you're not able to see any damage inside, try taking a cotton swab with some alcohol (isopropyl, not rubbing or drinking type), and cleaning the contacts.
