Have a Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00 120 GB SATA Hard Drive The laptop got wet and fried but the drive was dry. It does not spin up however when connected to another computer or power supply. Is there a way I can tell if it is the motor or the logic board - say with a multimeter or such. If it is the board where can i get one and swap it over? if it is the motor can it be swaped over? Thanks

I guess the easiest way to tell you this is straight forward. Either try blow drying out the laptop if you did not power it up after it was in the water or try to test it while it was wet. Blow it out really good. Let it dry completely if this is the case piece by piece being careful not to melt parts and misplace part etc. Most laptop or cell phones etc can be salvaged if they are allowed to dry and the batteries are removed so no contact is there. They will work again!
The hard drive by the time you get ready to fix this drive motor or whatever else it may need plus shipping and handling for the parts for it you could just buy another one they are not that expensive these days. You may end up having to take the loss of the lap top of course you can try EBay they have a variety of vendors that have mother boards as well at reasonable costs the hitch with this is that you have to be computer tech minded in order to replace a board some what if you are good at remembering where things were taken from and where they go back properly grounded etc. It would be a much cheaper fix than buying a new lap top this is for sure.
You can test the drive to see if it is good or not. If you have a computer that has a SATA slot on its board you can plug it in and give it a test to see if the hard drive will fire up and become visible in the My Computer left click and see if it shows up if that is the case you have a good hard drive. Thanks for using FixYa! I would personally if it were mine blow dry it out and give it time to completely dry. John

Is there a jumper setting to run my hitachi 250 gb sata laptop hdd as a slave ?

There should be, look on the rear of the drive, close to the SATA and power connectors, you should see the jumper connections as well.

It varies from drive to drive, but the jumper setting could be engraved near the connector, look of SL for a slave setting.

If no, look on the label on the top of the drive, there should be the jumper settings listed there.
Some may be ambiguous, my last one offered the option of Master on / off. (Jumper in position 1 for on, no jumper for off) The off in this case was of course slave.

The result being, no jumpers - Slave.

My laptop cannot read my hard disk, why?

Either:
* no power reaching the hard-disk
* the "data" cable is no longer connected to the hard-disk and/or to the motherboard
* the "spinning" part of the hard-disk is no longer spinning
* the "electronics" part of the hard-disk has failed.

Take the computer to a qualified computer technician, for trouble-shooting, and possibly a replacement of the disk-drive.

Is the disk-drive still under warranty? If so, exercise the warranty to get a replacement disk-drive.

You need a 2.5" inch SATA to USB external harddrive enclosure.

since its a laptop hard drive you need a small case.

IS THERE ANY replacements for YH278 HITACHI 120 GB SATA HARD DRIVE HTS541612J9SA00, THAT IS CAN I REPLACE WITH 250GB.

Generally speaking, you can replace any SATA hard drive with any other SATA hard drive. Notebook SATA drives are all the same size, basically, (2.5 inch), and desktop drives are generally the same size (3.5 inch), Desktop and notebook SATA drives will connect to the same power and interface cables, though desktop drives require more power. Just make sure that you pick a 2.5" drive for your notebook, or 3.5" drive for your desktop, and the drive will attach with no problems.

As for the size of the drive, to my knowledge, any system with SATA should support any size SATA drive (I put a 500 gig drive in my notebook, where the stock drive was 160 gig).

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........
