I want to turn the mic off on my laptop but use a mic that is with a headset. Is there a way to turn one off and leave the other so it will come on when plugged in?

It sounds like you are still using the mic on the laptop. Because you are far away from it, it sounds like echo.
Make sure the phillips headset is selected in the Windows mixer.
Make sure you are plugged into the mic jack on the laptop.
Make sure the mic is not muted. This is a default setting.
It could be that your mic is clogged up or dirty, or that you have a
loose or broken wire. No way to know. If you try to clean the mic with a
damp cloth, do not run it under water. Surgery drinks will leave
crystals in the mic, which do not allow sound through. If it still won't
work you may need to replace the headset.
Your exterior mic MAY have been the one ACTUALLY working rather than the one on the headset. Some mics require a battery for the mic part to work, Not sure about your particular Plantronics. If it has a battery, then check the battery as the receiver part does not use it but the mic MAY use it.
Do you have a headset mic combo? If so, make sure they are plugged in to right ports and the volume for mic and headphones is turned on. This can be done by right clicking speaker icon in taskbar and selecting the 2 different functions.
You did great troubleshooting for your laptop. If the sound is fine and good for the headset, your sound card is probably not the problem. The driver aspect, should not be the problem either if it works with your headset. So herein lies the dilemma...the problem is most likely due to some physical componenent between the built-in mike and the computer case itself. You should take it to a laptop repair shop and see what they can do. It has nothing to do with the software or the sound card. It is the physical component of the built-in mike and speakers. Get that checked out and you should be good to go!
Just had the same problem occur on a laptop with same mic. Did the exact same thing yours did, I turned the mic boost on and ran the hardware test three or four times and it finally picked it up. Hope this helps.
