I have a Philips Freevents X56 laptop which is about 18 months old. For the last few months, I haven't been using it every day (I have a new one!) and for the last couple of weeks, I had it plugged in to a surge-protected plug socket. I have done nothing else with the laptop. However, when I went to turn it on yesterday, nothing happens at all.
I've unplugged it, taken the battery out, put the battery back in and switched the power on and again nothing happens.
The green light is on to say the cable is plugged in but other than that, the power switch does not power up the hard drive.
Any ideas of what might have happened?
Here's a link to the model I have http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1093.htm
Take it back to the shop. The Sale Of Goods Act says that goods have to last for a "reasonable" time. It is not reasonable for a laptop to break after 18 months.
See http://www.berr.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html
or search for "Sale Of Goods Act".
It is possible, however, that the power button is broken. Try getting some compressed air to blow out any gunk from underneath it. If the laptop supports it, remove the keyboard any make sure you don't have biscuit crumbs under the key.
Could be anyone of a number of things related to internal batteries. Let it charge for a while (does the charging light come on on the laptop? - isn't clear if the green light is on the powersupply or the laptop itself) and trying again.

Other suggestions I've received so far are:
* take the RAM out, put it back in. Then turn on again.
* Try turning on without battery in, only wall power.
* change plug fuse.
* use diff plug.
* Take it back to the shop. Ignore what they say about warranties - you're covered under the Sale Of Goods Act for 5 years
All very useful and I'll be trying each in turn.
update: when I have the battery in, the green power LED light switches on. When the battery is out but the power is on, there is no LED light.
Am I right in thinking this suggests the battery is at fault?
I have a Toshiba A70 Laptop and it does not start up all the time. Sometimes if I leave it to cool down for a while it will start up, other times it will not. Any Ideas?
