Not possitive, but sounds like 1 of the bearings on the mower deck is starting to seaze up.I would start with that. Remove the deck and belts and check all the pullys and bearings for free movement.

Craftsman 46 deck clogging

How tall is the grass you're mowing?

Possibly it needs cleaned. Remove deck and clean out any build up if grass/dirt.

If the blades have been sharpened multiple times, replace. When the lateral length gets too short the blades no longer create enough lift to expel the clippings.

My briggs and stratton twin cylinder engine runs good until I try to mow with it. The engine dies down and will cut off unless I disengage the mower.

If you are cutting to much grass this can happen or if the throttle control is not in fast speed (rabbit). If it is in slow speed (turtle) it will tend to die down in tall grass or wet grass. Good Luck...

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.

Engine cutting off

Depends on how it cuts off. If it gradually slows down over a few minutes or surges, it's likely the carburetor needs to be cleaned and rebuilt. But if it's an immediate cut off, it's likely to be a safety switch such as the one that shuts down the engine when you get off the seat if the mower is running. Sometimes this happens frequently to a light person who bounces on the seat when mowing.

Mower starts, but when I let off clutch, it dies.

Grass and debris clogg the switch mechinisms, safety interlocks are sometimes a pain to diagnose but I would first look at the seat interlock, the petal switch and ffinally then the mowing deck.
