Sadly, i can't provide you with an instructions manual since they're copyrighted material. But the Xbox 360 uses two methods of saving games. It used to have memory cards but right now the most common way to save games is by doing it on the console's hardrive (if one's aviable).

The xbox 360 does have a memory unit, and a harddrive, but I don't think the memory unit is required.

I would suggest you send it back and purchase a PS3 as they are a far more superior console. The Xbox is a poor man's PS3 and I personally be hugely embaressed for purchasing one. I'd much prefer to have a decent console and don't get me started on Blue Ray! Winner (me, not you, you just purchased a 360).
You can buy memory cards for it or what i suggest if youre going to be downloading movies and games is to buy a harddrive for it. you can search ebay for great prices or just go to your local electronics/game store. heres the link for the manual
