Press 1 EE +/- 4

EE is the key just above the 7 key, +/- is the key just to the right of the decimal point key. Don't use the - key, that's for subtraction not negation.

What to numbers can you multiply to get 280 and add to get-18?

When you say "to numbers" I assume you meant "two numbers."

There is no solution.

For the product of two numbers to be 280, either both numbers must be positive or both numbers must be negative. For the sum of two numbers to be -18, one or both numbers must be negative. Taken together, both numbers must be negative.

We can find two numbers that multiply to 280 and add to +18, then simply take the negative of both numbers.

The square root of 280 is about 16.7. The sum of any two numbers that multiply to 280 must be at least twice that, or at least 33.4. Since 33.4 is greater than 18, there is no solution.

If you want to do it the hard way, take any pair of negative numbers that multiply together to 280, add them together, and see how close you come to -18. For example, -1 and -280 add to -281. -2 and -140 add to -142. -4 and -70 add to -74. -5 and -56 add to -61. -7 and -40 add to -47. -8 and -35 add to -43. -10 and -28 add to -38. -14 and -20 add to -34, which is as close as you can come in the integers.

Why can't I multiply negative numbers on my El-520x???

Make sure you use the +/- key (located just to the right of the decimal point key) to enter a negative number, not the - key (to the right of the + key, used to subtract one value from another).

For example, press +/- 4 / +/- 3 = to divide -4 by -3 .

Make sure you use the +/- key just to the right of the decimal point key when entering negative values, including exponents.

What is 9 to the 2nd power plus -7 to the 3rd power plus -6 to the 2nd power x 5

I never know if these questions are serious, but I'll play along.

Remember the definition of a power: it's a number multiplied by itself that many times. For example, 4 to the 3rd power (4^3) is 4 X 4 X 4, or 64. So the problem you list can be written

9^2 + (-7^3) + (-6^2) + 5, or

9 X 9 + (-7 X -7 X -7) + (-6 X -6) + 5

Don't forget that negative X negative = positive when multiplying.

81 + (-343) + 36 + 5 = -221

Simply press the (-) key before entering a negative number, in the same place you see the negative sign in print.

For example, to multiply 3 by -4, press 3 x (-) 4 ENTER

TI-30x...I am trying to figure out how I use this calculator

Hello,
Entering the keys and number as you write it can be done with enough parenthees to make sure calculator does what we intend it to.
But I would rather use the commutativity propertie of multiplications to same me some extra ().

Step 1
4 [(+/- change sign)][2nd][10 to the x] [ X ]6.1923 [=]
Step2
[x^2][=]
I first calculate the product 6.1928 x 10^-4 then take the square of the result. Because you can never be sure that the calculator takes 6.1923 to power 2 then multiply or multiply 6.1928 x 10^-4 and raise to power 2.
You can force the calculator with an opening parenthesis and a closing one but if you omit the ) and get an error, it may be hard to detect.

Hope it helps.

Poisson

Hello
To raise a number to any power you use the [^] caret key or on some calculators the [x^y] (x raised to exponent y)

20^(4) =160000

20 to the power of negative 3
20[^] 3 [(-) or +/-] ENTER gives 1.25x10^(-4) = 0.000125 (-) is the small minus sign.

If that gives you a syntax error
20[^] [(-) or +/-] 3[ENTER] = 0.000125

27 [^] (1/3] represents the cube root of 27 which is 3.
Hope it helps.
