Do you know what the average electric cooktop lifespan is? We have a Kenmore that is 9 years old and working fine. However, we are in the midst of a renovation and are wondering if it wouldn't be wise to run gas to have a gas cooktop. But since we are short on money, that would probably have to wait for numerous years. so how long the electric range top lasts is important. it may not be worth doing. thanks for your help.

The life span of the range depends on it's use or abuse.... Common issues are burners and the connections that the burner plugs into. These are not hard to change out.... There is nothing that can make the stove useless, if you keep after it. Newer units do a better job of retaining the heat within the unit, oven wise....Which is nice.

A gas range is certainly nicer, so they say. It is faster, but has one odd issue: if you boil water over, you can put out the flame and have raw gas running in. Most work this way, expensive units have thermal sensors that would turn off the gas flow in flame out condition....

My wife loves her gas range....

From a website...

7.3.7 Magnetron Life Expectancy

The typical life of a magnetron tube is approximately 2000 hours of operation. Some factors that can diminish the life of a magnetron are: 1) no-load operation, 2) operating with too much metal in the cooking cavity, 3) line voltage consistently too low or too high, 4) improper phasing, 5) improper installation or removal, 6) replacing associated high-voltage components with substitutes that are incompatible with the system design, 6) continual operation at the upper limit of its heat tolerance due to inadequate air circulation, 7) obstruction in the wave-guide, 8) failed stirrer operation.

---------

We use ours about 15 mins a day which would mean 2000 hours would be reached in 22 years but as they say there are a lot of factors which may reduce its life. The design and parameters of the oven will make a considerable difference. E.G. A highish power magnetron always underrun will last much longer than a smaller one run at its max ratings.

A restaurant might reach 2000 hours in only a year or so and industrial machines whether for cooking food or other processes will require frequent magnetron replacement.

My GE builtin microwave oven makes a buzzing sound, even when you just turn the surface light on and when you try to program it and, of course, doesn't heat. The repairman says it needs a new control...

Working inside a microwave is not something Average Joe should attempt. There are potentially LETHAL amounts of stored energy that needs to be properly discharged before repairs can begin.

The repairs in this case are more than 60% of a NEW one - so it is advisable to put the $$ toward a new unit with warranty. 2001 makes it 9 years old. Typically manufacturers don't support after 10 years.

Thanks!!

I have an older kitchenaid 30-inch cooktop - Model number KGCS100S. I want to replace it and need to know the size of the existing cut-out. I can't get a measurement without a lot of extra work and...

Hello

Unfortunately, the cooktop you have is no longer in production, and even if i give you the dimensions of the cooktop, the cut - out is not a standard size, some people like to make a more spacious cut - out, where others give it a tight fit.

Best way of knowing is to unscrew the screws and lift out the top and measure the dimensions yourself.

I really hope this can be of help, please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards
Andrea
