If
you can connect your VN1000 and see it or access it from My Computer, as a
Drive, then you can use Recuva to try and recover your files.
As an alternative, you could try running TestDisk on the drive, which is also free, but may
recover more data. Here is a step by step guide to using TestDisk, as
it is more complex than Recuva:

I checked into the manual for the VN1000, and it looks as if it cannot be connected to the computer using USB. You will need to contact a professional data recovery service, such as:http://www.dataretrieval.com/ They may be able to recover the lost data for you. The next recorder you get, make sure it can connect to a PC just in case you have memory problems again. This way you can recover the data yourself, next time.

The software of the voice recorder is not working properly. Please erase all the recorded massages. The turn off the power. Take out any battery from inside. The idea is to reset the unit. If there is any factory reset button press it. This will solve the problem.

The point is that I need to recover the messages on the recorder- I have my daily schedule in there for months in advance, and I have my kids voices from when they were little, and I have notes from lectures. I can't reproduce this information so I need to recover it, even if I buy a new unit and transfer the mesaages somehow
I tried the first and it made no difference, I want to try the second but I only have a mic and earphone jack on the recorder. Will this still work and if so I assume I'd use the earphone jack, but what kind of cable would I use- do they make a mini earphone jack and usb cable?
