Your cartridges may need to be re-aligned. Remove the cartridges from your printer. Close the cover. Unplug and replug your printer into the power source to reset it. When your printer turns on, reinsert your cartridges. It will then print an alignment page. Try to print a document. If problem continues, try following the troubleshooting steps in this article in the Lexmark website about How to Resolve a Blurry Print Issue Without Replacing the Cartridge.

Mfc-420cn alignment issues?
My gut feeling is that the printer's head can not move freely.

Check the round iron bar on which the printer head runs. It should be shiny and non-sticky.

You can add a few drops of sowing machine oil. This should last for a while.

Need to send your printer in for service sooner or later though.

Power problem..
could be a defective printer mainboard.
BTW did you had lighting strikes the days before? Your prob happens quite often after lighting strikes or power peaks.

Double striking letters in middle of sentence
This was one of the BEST All-In-One printer HP had ever made
Its a real fortune to still have it.

Verification of color out – happens only after keeping the unit idle for quite some time.
1. Are the cartridges out of ink – check ink levels
2. check self-test report patterns (missing lines or streaked bars)
3. Look for missing colors or ink smears.
4. Was this issue showing up because of any one single color?
5. Was it stored in a warm environment (Stored under direct sunlight?)
6. Manual Cleaning & Cleaning from Driver

Horzontally double printing & characters are not clers.
Is the ribbon tight or sticking, If ribbon can't turn, it delays entire carriage, you will notice that if you move carriage up and down by hand ribbon turns, I have seen sticky ribbon s cause problems as well as gearing that drives ribbon with wornout gears

If self test fails then all faults /i can think of on these is

  • Dry rail/dirty bearing
  • incorrectly manufactured ribbon
  • Damaged dot head
  • broken/breaking ribbon interface carriage cable
  • worn ribbon drive gears
  • worn/dirty ribbon drive rail
  • main board
