From the description the GPS system needs to be updated, your manual should provide the information you need.

SOURCE: my power cord that plugs

It could be a problem with the mini USB plug on the charger. If it doesn't go in far enough it will cause that problem. Try pushing it in further. If that doesn't work you'll need to get a Garmin power cord.

GPS SYSTEMS HAVE A TENDENCY TO LOSE CONNECTIVITY TO SATILLITES BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER, CLOUD COVER, TUNNEL ENTRANCE, BAD OR NO POWER, BATTERY LIFE HAS BEEN EXPENDED, HAZARD OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE TO GPS SYSTEMS, AND IMPROPER VEHICLE MOUNTING AND HAND HELD POSITION. FREE SOLUTIONS 1. ALWAYS PLACE YOUR GPS DEVICE IN THE UPPERMOST PORTION OF YOUR VEHICLE SO THAT THE GPS SIGNAL MAY EASILY LOCATE YOUR DEVICE EVEN WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD 2. KEEP YOUR BATTERY CHARGED ONLY WHEN IT NEEDS IT MOST AND AVOID CHARGING OFTEN 3. IF YOU OVERCHARGE YOUR GPS DEVICE, YOU WILL EXPERIENCE BATTERY LEAKAGE, WHICH CAN EAT AWAY AT YOUR CLOTHING, DESTROY YOUR DEVICE IN SECONDS, AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE SEATS 4. YOUR GPS DEVICE HAS A TENDENCY TO FREEZE BECAUSE OF THE SIM AND MEMORY CHIPS LOCATED WITHIN IT 5. YOU CAN FIX THE FREEZING PROBLEM BY REMOVING THE SIM CHIP AND MEMORY CHIP AND RESTARTING YOUR SYSTEM 6. OTHER FREEZE PROBLEMS OCCUR BECAUSE THE DEVICE IS COLD WHEN IT IS KEPT IN THE VEHICLE AND CHIP CREEK OCCURS WHERE THE DEVICES MICROCHIPS BECOME LOOSE AND TIGHTEND BECAUSE OF WARM AND COLDER AIR FLUCTUATIONS. IT IS BEST TO KEEP THE DEVICE IN A PURSE OR ON A TABLE WHERE IT IS NOT SUBJECT TO CONSTANT TEMP. CHANGE 7. PREVENTION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE IS BEST SOLVED BY: interference from devices located nearby, and even a radio turned on and located really close to your unit. This is normally known as electromagnetic interference to electronics and is very common

SOURCE: garmin 1300 freezes when usb cable is plugged in

This is normal. The satnav is meant to freeze when connected to your computer. This is because when it's connected to the computer it's usually for updating information on the satnav and that wouldn't be possible if the satnav was active.

Welcome to Fixya

Sounds like the unit is recognizing that you are plugging in the device to the computer. If this issue just recently happened, try to restore the unit back to factory default state. This will identify us if the problem is the software of the unit or the hardware. Pelase procedure below on how to restore the unit:

  • 1 Turn off and unplug the device.
  • 2 Press the lower right corner of the screen with your finger or a pencil eraser, and keep pressing while you turn the device back on with the power button.
  • 3 Touch "Yes" when you receive the message "Do you really want to erase all user data?" This will reset the device to factory defaults.
  • 4 Follow the prompts to reconfigure your device.

  • Thank you for using Fixya!

My Garmin won't do anything. Has a picture at the bottom with what appears to be the Garmin - USB cord - computer. Any clue? I do have it plugged into the computer right now to see if it would do anything...

The problem with the car charger is in the mini USB socket in the back of the satnav. The mini USB plug doesn't go in far enough although it appears to be fully in. Push it in further and it will work. When it's connected to the computer it's not possible to use the satnav. It's meant to show this picture then.

When it is plugged in only shows a picture and a picture of computer that shows system been connected to it.

Nuvi will show a picture of unit when plugged in to computer, its charging, connected this way is a slow charge.

You also use this way to update any maps or firmware for your unit.

If you have a new Nuvi.... and you are looking to set it up, you must first register to Garmin to unlock the maps its free.

Go to www.MyGarmin.com your unit will be detected and map unlocks will proceed

You didn't give the model. If it's a model where the power is supplied by a mini USB lead plugs into the back of it the solution is at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5555853-garmin_nuvi_2xx_shows_satnav_connected

    Not turning on

My unit was totally dead. I just kept it plugged into my computer for about 12 hours. I downloaded the newest software from Garmin. When I unplugged it from my computer, the battery seemed to drain quick, but once I plugged it into the card adapter in the car... everything seems to be running great now.
