The noise that you're hearing is probably the hard disk needle moving back and forth trying to read data on the magnetic platter. I'm afraid that the noise you're hearing in the beginning is the drive trying to read data, but failing. This is usually the result of a faulty or dead drive.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad luck,

Regards,
Chris

This sometimes happens with flash drive. Just to be sure, do back up and reformat the flash drive. Pls update if that solve the problem. if not we will try another solution.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 200 GB... Problem

Its going to be a hardware thing. Is the drive connected to a UB2 port? The network itself has its own data transfer rate  ( ie. gigabit ) you need to make sure you cables are no longer than 6 ft, its plugged into a high speed port, and that all ports on the chain are of the same speed. If you have the option, go firewire for this. If that does not rectify it, check adminsitrator properties of the drive.
