It's honestly pretty hard to mess up. They're keyed. Just make sure it clicks. You'll likely have an extra power cable that doesn't plug into anything. It's normal.
There will be writing on the motherboard in several places, look very carefully and then google
Everything should just plug in without a problem, each device (ide cable/sata cable/CPU/graphics card) uses different shaped plugs and sockets, they can only usually plug in there own sockets.
Unless you are going to a newer technology ( IDE to SATA or AGP to PCI-E graphics)
If it is the same CPU socket type your only small problem may be connecting the front panel wires (led/hdd/reset/usb/audio)
it is just a case where the supply to the processor is not proper! the processor is not getting power, you will see that the red colored hdd led will not light(blink) when u turn it on. so what you can do is try changing the SMPS and if it is not solved with that then try removing all the components and fix just the main items needed to start the system and check. it will start and then try installing one one extra components later at one point if it again goes into that state then that component must be creating the short change it and its done!
