My Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista does not recognize the canon md 120 camcorder. The camcorder came with a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. Since the Dell only has a 4 pin port - I bought a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
However my camcorder is still not recognized. Do you think I need to use the original cable (4 -6 pin) cable and a converter (6 pin to 4 pin)??
I've tried everything else! The camcorder came without any software CD/drivers. The canon website doesn't offer any drivers.
I'm at a loss. Any help appreciated!
Browsing over the md120 specs, included should be a software disc for the usb connector, so it shouldn't matter whether you use an adapter or the 4 to 4 cable. This disc will have the drivers and software for using the camera in conjunction with your laptop. Have you tried this download for the camera.

Also check out this link. Towards the bottom under additional features it lists software, drivers and utilities, and at the bottom under supplied accessories it lists application software/usb driver. Go to the store you purchased this at or contact Cannon support and get the disc that was supposed to be included.

I have the same camcorder that I'm trying to connect to a Dell INSPIRON 530s and I need advice on what which type of cable to use. I've gone through the computer manual and unless I'm missing something, I don't see DV (IEEE1394) terminal or a DV capture board.
